Tata Motors had to come out with this car a couple of years ago, was delayed for some unknown reasons.
Tata Indica was the largest selling diesel car in India for commercial purposes and the new car would have picked up sales without any competition. But some things are better later than never.
The new Indica V2 Xeta gets all the big brother characteristics with bigger dimensions. The Xeta has more space than other small cars in its category like the Alto, Zen and Santro. It also gets a firmer grip on roads and a heavier suspension that makes riding, over city potholes and slightly rough roads, a truly smooth affair.
The tyres provide a good grip over roads and 10mm wider than other small cars. The handling is slightly heavy and this makes turning around curves lightly difficult. But the heavy steering wheel feels good on highways while speeding; it gives the driver a feel of the roads.
The interiors look the same as Indigo LS, but the rear seats have been given more legroom. The material used on the dash is better and the upholstery is light coloured which makes you feel that there is more space than you can feel.
The Xeta is better than its predecessor as it sports a newly developed 1.4 liter 4 cylinder which churns out 70 bhp of power and a torque of 14kgm. The ample torque makes gear shifting a less frequent activity. It is able to pull the car from a low of 800 rpm also which is absent in other small cars. In fact the entire design of the car is based on the engine.
As all the good things are accompanied by the bad things and that is the gearbox, which feels slightly tight for quick moves. The gear box needs to undergo a lot of improvement before it matches the quality of Swift and Spark. It does deliver ample torque required to steer the car at the right speed.
However, Tata Motors is yet to come up with a style that is acceptable to the European and Japanese car manufacturers. The design appears hurriedly done in some corners. It has abrupt slopes and wide angles. Tata Motors has scored many victors in giving what India wants, but it is actually yet to make a sophisticated design.
Tata Indica V2 Xeta is a good buy and guarantees value for money by being priced at the comfortable Rs 2.66 lakh. The new Tata car is expected to make a significant contribution to the commercial car segment in big cities and individual car owners in small cities. Xeta is likely to become the bread and butter car of the Indian auto manufacturer.
