Dicor – an accessible miracle

After Tata Motors introduced the Dicor system, the direct common rail injection system for its cars in India; advertisers are hyping the system like it is a miracle in working. Tata has brought out at least one car variant with the DICOR system in all its vehicles from the new Indica V2, Indigo, Safari and the newly launched Sumo Grande.

Actually the definition of direct fuel injection is that it is a fuel delivery system to engine resulting in performance enhancement. It also results in cleaner emission and fuel economy is hiked.

bullet How it works:

The engine sucks diesel and air into the cylinder, and compresses them with the help of piston. This compressed energy is igniting with a spark resulting in an explosion that drives the piston downwards with pressure. This system of combustion and piston movement produces power.

bullet How it is better:

The difference in the system between the direct common rail injection and earlier versions is in the intake of air. In the earlier versions of engine air and diesel were mixed in a chamber adjacent to the cylinder which was called the intake manifold. In a direct fuel injection system the air and diesel use separate entrances to create energy. The air is still directed through the intake manifold while the diesel is injected directly on to the cylinder.

The injector is designed in such a manner that the diesel gets sprayed (rather than flowing into the cylinder) on the cylinder. The spray helps utilize each droplet to the optimum capacity resulting in a complete combustion.

In this manner the system has more control over the flow of diesel into the engine. Besides the precise fuel metering it has precise injection timings. Hence you are able to achieve more power with less fuel consumption.

bullet Dicor on vehicles:

Direct common rail injection fuelled engines have more advantage than the regularly available engine. One thing is that to achieve high power it does not require premium fuel as recommended for cars like Ferrari and Porsche.

If a car is able to produce 250hp and 235lb.ft torque in a regular engine, a direct fuel injection system would produce 303hp and 296lb.ft of torque. Despite churning more power the fuel economy is higher than regular engines.

The direct injection technology has been around since the 50's. It was not popular because an electronically controlled indirect fuel injection got the same results at a much lower cost. Also the dominant technology of carburetor offered little chance for diversification in fuel injection.

However, recent advancement in engines and rising fuel costs, have driven the car manufacturers to go for direct fuel injection system. Diesel engine can be easily fitted with direct fuel injection system because they use a different system of combustion.

Hence you can see more diesel engine cars with direct common rail fuel injection system. That is when Tata Motors comes into picture. In future many more cars will be powered by direct fuel injection system.
