Maruti Suzuki India has always been credited with making cars that are easy to drive and user-friendly. The one time highest selling
M800, is still used to train new driver in the art of driving.
But now the leading Indian car manufacturer has decided to focus on empowering women with driving skills and also promote road safety. Maruti Suzuki took up the initiative to teach safe driving habits as part of its programme to shape the new world of women. In a unique scheme launched on International Women's Day, it has decided to reach women drivers through Maruti Driving School and Driving Institutes and Research in the country.
As many as 30 Maruti driving schools spread over 27 cities in the country are engaged in to achieve this goal. Interestingly, at least 55% of the trainees at these schools are women. And as many as 15,000 women have already been trained at Maruti Driving Schools.
The schools will sensitize women about safe driving skills and also help promote mobility for women. A majority of women getting trained in driving are housewives. Even college students and some others are in their late 50's are enrolled.
The training module is based on international driving standards. The training includes both theory and practical sessions. The trainees will have to undergo driving tests in under extreme conditions including driving in Fog, rain, at night, over rough terrain and ascent/ descent hills.
This training is conducted in state-of-art room which is equipped with simulators to give the trainees real-life-like experience of diverse conditions. Only when the trainees pass the classroom tests are they allowed to go driving a car on road.
In order to make women more comfortable, lady instructors have been appointed to train them. These instructors not only teach women on how to drive but also give tips on car maintenance. They are taught how to change a tyre, handle engine overheating and minor repairs as well.
In 2007
Maruti Suzuki had offered complimentary services to pick cars for servicing and drop vehicles for its women customers. This initiative also found a favorable mention in JD Powers South Asia Pacific Awards, customer satisfaction index. As many as 1, 30,000 women cars owners received the service last year. Maruti is contemplating on extending the offer to this year also.
Maruti Suzuki's unique initiative will surely go down well with their customer and help improve sales performance.
