When Ferrari zipped across India…

Ferrari is planning to try its hand in the booming India car market. In the mean time it has organised the ‘Magic of India Discovery’ tour, an 11,000 kilometer tour started from Mumbai on February 25th and ended back in the great city on May 8th at the grand Taj Hotel.
The cars zipped across most of India in anonymity, dressed in brick red and white instead of the Ferrari’s signature red colour. Ferrari was here to test the Indian roads for drivability, smoothness and speed. The expedition aimed at discovering Indian terrain while negotiating different environmental conditions.

Ferrari’s 612 Scaglietti cars were involved in the tour. The Scaglietti’s are powered by a powerful V12 engine that pumps out an amazing 540 bhp and a torque of 60 Kgm at 5250 rpm. The powerful engine was teamed with a 6-speed Formula One gearbox and transaxle. All the cars involved were designed by ace Italian design shop Pinninfarina.

The expedition was led by ace Italian driver Gabrieli Lalli. The tour was divided into 12 stages that last 72 days; during the tour Ferrari covered virtually every state in India from Tamil Nadu to Punjab.

The tour started from Mumbai with the cars heading for picturesque Goa, a land that still carries the flavour of the Portuguese who once ruled the state. It then went toward the palaces and gardens of Mysore. The sourthermost point of the Indian Peninsula, Kerala was the next destination. On an upward drive from here, the cars zipped through India’s silicon capital Bangalore and then turned towards Hyderabad, the land of the Nizams. The cars also visited the Ramoji Films City on their way to Vizag, the prominent port of eastern India.

Driving along the eastern coastal regions through Orissa, the Scagliettis reached Kolkata. The scenic drive continued along the banks of the holy river Ganges to Varanasi and then to the historical Khajuraho. The tour further crossed the Nawabi lands of UP. Not to be missed out on here was the Corbett National Park and Tiger Reserve.

The tour passed the lower regions of the Himalayas and the Dharamshala. It continued through the national capital New Delhi and went towards Amritsar. From the cold regions of Punjab, the cars headed the Thar Desert in Rajasthan thereby covering Agra and Jaipur en-route to Mumbai. Criss-crossing across the desert under the blistering sun and having crossed the colourful state of Gujarat, the cars finally reached back in Mumbai on May 8th. The drivers were accompanied by 50 journalists who were also a part of the team.

The Ferrari tour has brought the cars closer to the Indian public. Having seen them in Formula One races, the local population easily identified the cars with their prancing horse logo.
