Brief on Car Aerodynamics

Car aerodynamics is a refined form of science that studies the action of air over a car in motion.  It competes for position when slides over a car in motion with key vehicle design considerations. The body style and car ergonomics play a vital role in this competition. It’s important with respect to such operating forces that car manufacturers design cars which steer a perfect balance between the push and pull of the force exerted by the moving air.
Aerodynamics started its life as a form of art and science. Many skilled researchers, designers, and engineers tried to apply various approach to get the best aerodynamics. Some took their inspiration from natural beauty like birds and fish. Early designers went deep into the mechanism as how birds are able to fly disputing the force of air and how fishes are able to swim against the strong force of water. Some even took the basic learning from ship designers who made their venture in the fast flowing waters. Gradually, these designers came to a conclusion that the sleek form was important to facilitate fast movement. Furthermore, they tried to get into precise details of how aerodynamics can work and what are the key benefits with respect to cars and other automotives.

In continuation of this research, Gottlieb Daimler and Karl Benz developed gas-powered cars in 1880s. They got their inspiration from airplanes designers. Later on, car designers looked at airplanes that were designed with a focus on aerodynamics. This focus brought a revolution in the car industry and designers started developing cars with a similar focus. The first cars designed with aerodynamics somewhere in late 1990s were popularly known as ‘airships on wheels’ because they had a similar structure like that of an airplane.

With the advent of technology and innovation various other modifications and measures came into existence that helped car designers make their cars aerodynamically better. This gave birth to various car models that reflect the innovation in all aspects.

Today, there are many cars on Indian roads that are designed with an improved aerodynamics for a safer and comfortable ride. In terms of passenger cars, it plays a minor but significant role as it helps increase the car’s interior space as well as improves mileage. Large SUVs are loved by families but the only reason that they are compromised is because of their large and box-like body structure. Sleek designed SUVs will help them to compete better with air resistance. This in turn will improve handling, cornering, and even mileage.

In case of racing cars, aerodynamics play a major role as it is one exclusive factor that transforms a car into a speed bullet. A race car chassis is designed in the form of an inverted wing so that the car has better traction. It is known that the air above creates greater pressure and push the car down to the track, creating an imbalance.

Some of the common examples of design specifications that are primarily based on car aerodynamics are low ground clearance, sleek design structure, increased curvature of the roofline, reclining windshield, minimized frontal area, rounded lines in the exterior structure, underbody panels, and sealing body gaps.

Overall, car aerodynamics makes the present day cars more spacious, fuel-efficient, and safer.
