Beetle (Volkswagen)
This car from Volkswagen is a small family car that had started its production since 1938. In fact the car was not given the name
Volkswagen Beetle initially, but it was given the name Type 1, and gradually it was named as Kafer, the German word for Beetle and likewise the name struck to the car which was even called as the 'Bug'. The car which came into being as a part of Adolf Hitler's Nazi plan, later with its counter culture styling became a major hit during the swinging sixties. The bug, after being in production for about 58 years was phased out in 2003 and entered the new millennium as the new beetle, a new generation car.
Mustang (Ford)
Mustangs are wild horses that are found in North America and Ford Motor Company named their car as
Ford Mustang because the car portrayed all the qualities of this wild magnificent beast. The company started the Mustang's production in 1965. The Mustang has also manufactured the pony car class later which went on to become an iconic muscle car. Currently in its fifth generation these cars have send a real breeze of car manufacturing and styling in America as well as globally.
Skylark (Buick)
Named after the skylark, a small bird that belongs to the lark breed and found in Europe, Africa and America, the Skylark is a passenger car from General Motors. This mid-size car is a very successful model and has been in production till 1998. The car, when produced each time had drastic changes in the styling and technology. The car through its generations was available in coupe, sedan, and convertibles.
Viper (Dodge)
Inspired by the AC Cobra, the Dodge wiper boasts of a powerful engine, latest design and an aggressive styling. This two-seater sports car is V10-powered, and is manufactured by the Dodge division of Chrysler LLC. One major drawback of this car was poor fuel efficiency. This
muscle car is now in the brim of extinction but there are chances that it will be rescued as it is one of the most famous sports cars of America.
Impala (Chevrolet)
One among the best-selling full-sized car of America, Chevrolet Impala shares the second part of its name with a medium-sized African antelope and has a very distinct four taillights. When launched in the 1950s, Impala was among the most expensive cars of the period, but the price was not constrain for the Chevrolet Impala, as it is the full-size car that was a complete sold-out bringing instant fame to the company.
Cougar (Mercury)
This car has the name of the mountain lion, cougar that is found in America. The car is sold by Ford under its brand, Mercury. The car had shared the same platform as that of the Ford cars which is very common among the mercury cars. It is a very interesting factor that the company had given so much importance to the name of the car as the advertisements of the car, during the 1970s, had the leashed big cat in its advertisement.
Barracuda (Plymouth)
The Plymouth Barracuda belongs to the pony car class. It survived only for ten years starting from 1964 to 1974, but it is remarkable that within such a short span of time the company had already introduced three generations of this car. Barracuda is a ray-finned fish, and the name better suits the car than Panda, which was supposed to be the name of the car when it was conceptualized.
Stag (Triumph)
The car, which has the name of male deer, was styled by the famous Italian designer Giovanni Michelotti which was by itself the main attraction of the car. This short lived car stayed in the market from 1970 to 1977 but was able to win a unique position within that short span of time. The revolutionary design of the car was another striking feature of the car, but it is not only those things related to the styling and designing that makes the car a much accepted one, but it is also the high performance and the pricing of the car that made it very popular.
Bronco (Ford)
A Bronco is a wild untamed horse and the manufacturers found it as the right name for the
sport-utility vehicle that was mainly targeted at those who would love
off-roading. The American crowd was looking for more adventure in driving and it is when Ford introduced the 2-door SUV in 1966. In the North American International Auto Show, which was held in 2004, Ford introduced a Bronco concept car with some features of the early Bronco. And Ford is interested in reviving the car by manufacturing it all over again to suit the modern needs of the people.
The list doesn't end here, there are other cars including the Road Runner (Plymouth), Pinto (Ford), Honey Bee (Nissan), Marlin (AMC). Reading through this article, one cannot but notice that the cars named after animals, except for a few, didn't stay in the market for long. It was either the economic issues or the bad response that made the model extinct like that of many animals in the course of evolution.
