Hyundai Motor India Foundation - Charter that Drives Sustainable Development

Hyundai Motor India is the second largest passenger car manufacturer and the largest car exporter in India. The company has lived a glorious ten years in the country achieving significant milestones during its journey to never-ending success.

Since the time the company is established it has been committed to sustainable development of the society and preservation of the environment. With the passage of time, Hyundai started penetrating its own commitment of sustainable development into the philosophy of the organization. The core philosophy of the company was that no industry can sustain in this world without giving back the best to the society that actually drives its sustenance. The integration of Hyundai’s commitment and philosophy led to the establishment of the charter Hyundai Motor India Foundation (HMIF) on April 10, 2006.

HMIF is a trust established by Hyundai Motor India to address the expectations of the society and offer the society a safer and better place to live in. Hyundai after the foundation of this trust started penetrating its core competence, its value, its commitment, and its philosophy into its processes. Be it designing, production, engineering, or manufacturing of vehicles, all the processes are concentrated on the aim of exceeding global benchmarks. From the design stage to the production every process is ensured to meet the demands of the society and offer eco-friendly nourishment. The car manufacturer is believed to manufacture the best of fuel-efficient cars.

The establishment of this charter expanded Hyundai’s reach in different arenas of the society. Through relentless efforts and concrete initiatives the car manufacturer extended its support in the field of Environment, Road Safety, Health Care, Art, Science and Technology, and Educational and Vocational Training. The company had also received an acclamation for establishment of HMIF by Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, President of India.

The trustees that drive the organization are Managing Director, President, Executive Director, and Legal Advisor of Hyundai Motor India and the funding is received completely by Hyundai. It is also known that Rs 100 of each Hyundai car sale is also contributed to the funds of HMIF.

The foundation has made major contribution for the development of the society in all possible means. The charter made its first contribution of Rs 35,00,000 for the preservation of the Senate House of the University. For this social cause the fund was handed over to Dr S. P Tyagarajan, Vice-Chancellor - University of Madras.

Just after three days of its establishment, HMIF also donated a Hyundai Accent to Care Foundation on April 13, 2006. Care Foundation is a non-profit organization that provides health care to people from rural areas and economically weaker sections of the society.

Here are some of the different areas where Hyundai has played a crucial role in sustainable development of the society:

Environment Protection

When it comes to environment protection Hyundai has put in the best of its efforts to manufacture vehicles that can provide world class ride quality whilst preserving the environment.

At Hyundai’s manufacturing plant in Chennai the company has positioned an Environment Management System (EMS) that is a certification program to cover host of areas like environment awareness, training, technology upgradation, recycling, waste management, and fulfilling government regulations. The primary aim of the EMS is to inculcate environmental awareness and help car owners maintain their car in a better and healthy way. Apart from helping car owners, Hyundai is also working on possibilities that will also help the vendors implement EMS. For its extra-ordinary efforts in the environmental arena, the company has also received the ISO 14001 certification.

Hyundai has also pioneered many eco-friendly technologies like Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) and Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEVs). The introduction of kappa engine is also a significant technology that has made its contribution to Hyundai’s effort to preserve environment.

Road Safety

Hyundai is committed to road safety and undertakes various initiatives to ensure low number of road fatalities and car accidents. The car manufacturer helps create awareness of traffic rules and regulations and also impart knowledge on road discipline. Furthermore, the company ensures road safety by producing the safest vehicles for the Indian roads.

Hyundai has a key desire to make Indian roads safer and this desire led to Hyundai’s partnership with Institute of Road Traffic Education and Delhi Traffic Police. The three together introduced a road safety programme known as “Hyundai Traffic Squad“.

Hyundai Traffic Squad is a student traffic volunteer scholarship scheme under which young college and university students help the police in management of traffic for about three hours during peak traffic hours. They also help bus drivers and passengers at the bus stops by preventing overcrowding and jostling while boarding. According to the scheme all the students who volunteer receive a stipend of Rs 100 per month. This scheme is till now valid in Delhi and a similar scheme in other metro cities like Kolkatta, Bangalore, and Mumbai will further extend Hyundai’s reach in the road safety sector.

The scheme also provides verbal and physical training to all the students with respect to hand signaling and practical control of traffic. In verbal or class room training all the students are imparted knowledge about traffic control devices, road laws, types of road users, types of driving habits, administering first-aid, post accident management, road geometric, and environmental features.

Health Care

There are many remote areas in India where there is a huge scarcity of food and water. People there are deprived of even the basic necessities of life. HMIF plays a crucial role here and helps improve the condition of people by providing them the basic necessities. The company has done extensive work to provide a permanent source of water through various processes like water harvesting and water management.

Hyundai has also adopted four villages as a part of its community development project where the company helps people of these villages in the areas of primary health care, education, basic amenities, and employment opportunities.

Education and Vocational Training

Hyundai also plays a vital role in imparting education and vocational training to children and socially vulnerable groups. The company undertakes teaching programs and also offers private financing of educational infrastructure in remote areas. It also takes over imparting job-oriented training to unemployed youth from low-income background and provides employment to eligible candidates after the training is over.
