Honda New Small Concept

Since the inception of the Maruti 800 in India in December 1983, the Indian automotive world has been obsessed with the idea of small car. The idea of small car has caught the automobile world like a wild fire so much so that even big players in the field are now bringing in their own versions of the small car. One such biggie is the Japanese car major, Honda.

It should not be forgotten that, about 30 odd years down the line, Honda along with Toyota and Nissan was one of the strong contenders for the people's car project for India conceptualised by Sanjay Gandhi and his mother Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India. The project ultimately fell into the lap of Suzuki Motor Corporation which later formed the successful auto brand Maruti Udyog Limited with the collaboration of Government of India. It has now become Maruti Suzuki India after the Government of India sold its majority shares and stocks to Suzuki Motor Corporation.

Life has come one full circle for Honda after twenty-five years since the launch of the Maruti Suzuki 800. Now, Honda has finally accepted that ‘Small is Big’ in India and has come out with their “New Small”.

Honda Siel Cars India announced the world Premiere of the Honda new Small Concept on 5th January at the 10th Auto Expo 2010. The Honda New Small Concept is a concept model of a new small-sized car which Honda is currently developing for India and other emerging nations.

With its commitment to provide technologically advanced cars, the Honda New Small Concept is a ‘true Honda’ - futuristic design with maximum cabin space. The ‘Efficient energetic Exterior’ based on front-forward design lends the Honda New Small Concept an appealing dynamic presence.

Honda's design principle ‘Man Maximum - Machine Minimum’ has defined the underlying approach in the design concept of the Honda New Small Concept. A wide platform with a stable center of gravity was adopted to create a highly efficient compact size car without compromising on the cabin space hence greater passenger comfort.

Developed at Honda's Automobile R&D Centre in Japan, the Honda New Small Concept is designed to be a family car with a capacity to comfortably seat five adult passengers.

Addressing the media during an official press conference Mr. Koichi Kondo, Executive Vice President and Representative Director, Honda Motor Company said, “We are delighted to unveil the Honda New Small Concept at the 10th Auto Expo. India has been the hub for the compact car segment and is also the lead country for our research and development work on the New Small Concept. The new model based on this concept will be a global car with features to suit the needs of India customers. We plan to launch this car by 2011”.

Commenting on the unveiling of the New Honda Small Concept Mr. M. Takedagawa, President & CEO, Honda Siel Cars India said, “This is a remarkable occasion for Honda as we unveil the Honda New Small Concept to the world. India is a focus market for Honda and the World Premier of the New Small Concept at the Auto Expo is a testimony to this fact”.

With the booth concept of “Inspired by Dynamism - Truly Honda by Nature“ for Auto Expo 2010, Honda will express its relentless dynamism to create cutting edge technologies and its commitment to protect the environment for future generations. True to its nature of challenging spirit and bringing together the seemingly incongruous ends, Honda will bring alive the theme of its booth through an attractive range of displays.

In addition to the New Small Concept, Honda has also showcased the CR-Z Concept 2009 at the 2010 Auto Expo, a concept model for a new hybrid model, which was unveiled for the first time at the Tokyo Motor Show in October 2009.

‘CR-Z’ stands for ‘Compact Renaissance Zero’ - an expression intended to capture the idea of a renaissance in the design of compact cars that begins a new from fundamentals.

The CR-Z Concept features a dynamic yet sharp exterior design that makes people want to get in and drive. Designed to be ‹Futuristic and Dynamic’, the CR-Z Concept 2009 combines powerful performance in a compact form with a futuristic image. For its frontal view, an over-sized grill with a high-performance look is offset by openings on each side that lighten the overall feel. In the rear, tube-shaped rear combination lamps ensure better rearward visibility. Design details emphasizing the CR-Z's advanced image include door mirrors that provide high visibility in a stylish form, LED headlights patterned after luminous bodies to convey a sharp impression and jauntyfin-shaped sub-lights. Large 19-inch wheels are ready for a dynamic driving performance.

The keywords for the CR-Z Concept's interior design are ‘Hi-tech and Sporty’. The all-new interior fuses the liberating feel of airy spaciousness with an advanced interface that brings out the fun of the drive.

Apart from the current line-up of products from Honda, the Japanese car honcho also exhibited the world's fastest humanoid Robot, ASIMO and its superior fuel efficient i-VTEC engines at the 10th Auto Expo. Besides, the car maker also enthralled the crowd with the G-CON Technology.
