Safari has come to life again

The new Tata Safari Dicor (Direct Injection Common Rail engine) commercial has woken up the people to the existence of Safari. The Tata vehicle which had almost gone into oblivion has come back with a bang.

Since its launch in 1997, safari has always had decent sales figures. But it was never in the top league. The new Safari Dicor 2.2 VVT comes with a drastically reduced weight giving it the much needed power. It kicks of nearly 4000 rpm and a 32 kgm of torque.

The earlier Dicor engine though had a heavier engine and a poor torque, did reasonably well in sales. The new Dicor 2.2 VVT has all features– looks, power and driving dynamics what an SUV should have. It is modified with new features like “Follow-me-home” which automatically keep the headlight on for few seconds while you park your car in dark and “Reverse Guide System” that give rear views to the driver with the help of a camera attached below the license plate.

Engine

2.2 liter 16-valve four cylinder common rail diesel engines get a turbocharger which gives an impressive 140 bhp and 32 kgm torque. The vehicle can make it from 0-100 kmph in a modest 16 seconds and can reach 60 kmph in just 6.5 seconds. This new engine has beaten the older Dicor by one whole second. The gear box feels smooth and moves swiftly with a slight push. The vehicle has a firm grip on curves than ever before. For safety, the car has been provided with air bags, ABS (Anti-lock Brake System) and EBD (electronic braking system).

Exterior

The fit and finish levels have went through a complete re-designing with better looks. The grills are modified with chrome effects. The lighting fixtures with clear lens give the driver a clear visibility of roads ahead. The new Safari has got a good paint finish making it look luxurious than its predecessor.

Interior

In the interiors, customers have been given an option for leather seats. But those living in hot climate may just go for suede, else the leather could burn your skin.

The seats are comfortable to seat five adults, two in the front and three on the bench behind. The seats are comfortable and give enough legroom for the rear seat passengers. The running board makes climbing easier. The car has more effective AC equipped with rear ACs for back seat passengers. The round and clear dials are places neatly on the dashboard, but they could be better placed behind the wheels. The steering wheel is however the same as in the old, slightly tighter and gives a firm grip.

Ride quality has improved and the new safari is good on all surfaces including muddy ones. The tall boxy frame makes it difficult to negotiate curves firmly. The Safari is truly an all weather car.

The 2.2VVT is available in five variants and price ranges from Rs 7.16 lakh to Rs 13 lakh.
