The national association representing the Indian automobile industry was first incorporated 39 years ago as AIAM, an acronym for Association of Indian Automobile Manufacturers. Since then, the association has been engaged in protecting and promoting every need, desire, and interest of the auto industry. This body gradually became renowned worldwide because of the special emphasis it laid on environment and safety related issues.
Further to that, keeping pace with the continuously changing picture of the car industry, the collaboration between the government and the auto industry transformed AIAM to SIAM. The transformation to SIAM (Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers), as it is known today, happened in May 1998 with an aim to facilitate greater flexibility and enable expansion of operations. All members of AIAM joined SIAM with 3 new members added after the transformation.
The key aim of SIAM is to enhance and expand the Indian economy through the roots of the Indian automotive industry. It also aims to escalate an exchange of views, trade, and technical cooperation between the national and international auto industry. Through continuous efforts, the association desires to upgrade the technical capabilities of the Indian auto industry and scale up high-end production to meet global competition.
SIAM also interacts with automobile experts across the globe to assess new and advanced trends, developments, and innovations aimed at shaping the Indian automobile industry. Frontier Technologies, Promotion of Alternative Fuels, and Harmonization of
car safety and Emission Norms are three major projects that SIAM is currently pursuing.
Dissemination of information is an integral part of SIAM’s objective. It’s one of the reasons why the association was setup and thereafter the aims and ambitions follow.
Today, SIAM has 40 members, 13 working partners in India, and 19 working partners overseas. Among the 40 members, many Indian car manufacturers are the listed members of this association. With its associated members and partners, the national apex body serves as a crucial link between the Indian auto industry and the global industry. Keeping pace with socio-economic and technological changes, SIAM desires to act as a catalyst for the development, expansion, and global positioning of the Indian
automobile industry.
