Ford Fiesta vs. Hyundai Verna

The mid-size car segment is becoming competitive. This segment has all the executive cars that a top official of corporates would like to drive. However, the diesel cars take the cake away from the petrol ones. The running costs govern the choice of buyers. In this segment Ford Fiesta and Hyundai Verna faces tough competition from each other.

The space, comfort and price are main factors which drive the buyers towards making a choice. Hence both these cars have concentrated on making the cars look more upmarket as possible.

Let’s have a look at these cars separately:

Ford Fiesta: The Fiesta is the king in the sector so far. Fiesta’s cabin is more luxurious compare to Hyundai Verna. It comes in three engines types – the 1.4 L and 1.6 L petrol and 1.4 L diesel powertrain. The 1.4 L petrol price starts from Rs 6 lakh. The top-end ZXI TDCi comes with chrome accents on the exterior and a silver trim in the interiors. It also gets remote locking, power mirrors, seat height adjustment and fog lamps. The Fiesta is fitted with rotary air-conditioners which blows the cool air right on your face, making you feel cool instantly in hot summers. The switches and controls feel tough and are easy to operate. The steering wheel moves with precision, and the short throw gearshift makes it easy to drive around on city roads. The steering wheel helps the driver feels the road so that he can make quick adjustments to improve ride quality. The suspension handles the Indian rough roads easily offering a better ride quality. The height adjustable steering wheel is also comfortable for short drivers. However, as the front seats are positioned lower, the driver’s visibility of corners may be hampered slightly.

It comes with pull out cup holders and a unique fuel meter that shows how much distance can be covered with the existing amount of fuel in the tank. The Wiper stalks have been given European features and front doors come with large pockets to hold big bottles. The rear sets have been given metal casing to prevent luggage jutting into the rear passenger seating position. The seating is well cushioned for a comfortable drive. So this car is actually meant for long drives.

Hyundai Verna: The Hyundai Verna follows closely behind Fiesta. The Verna gets steering adjustments and sharper headlights. The diesel version of Verna is more popular than its petrol sibling. The rear seats get centre armrest with cup holders, which is unique in the premium mid-size category. The fog lamps come standard on all variants. The dash board has two tones to add a zing to the interiors.

The Verna is available in two versions the 1.6 liter petrol and 1.6 liter diesel CDRi versions. The top end version of CRDi comes with alloy wheels, audio, climate controls and ABS. The revved up to motion at 2000 rpm and get into full vroom after a few seconds of moving. The Verna matches the Fiesta in performance and power but it is the light weight steering and cheaper plastics which create the difference.

The Hyundai soft dulls the impact of rough road and improve ride quality. However, when on highway, Verna feels slightly unsure as gear shifts respond slowly compared to Fiesta. Verna also gets thinner tyres. The cabin is not completely contained and one can hear sounds from the outside. However, it is best in city roads for quick acceleration. The Verna can park itself in tight spots without any complain.

The price of these cars is placed in the range of Rs 7.5 lakh to Rs 8 lakh. But Hyundai offers a 24 month unlimited mileage warranty and discounts which you won’t get in the purchase of Fiesta. Hyundai also has a superior service network and cheaper spares as compared to Fiesta.

The two cars have been wooing customers with their merits. But if the Fiesta is the king, the Verna does not lack behind in the race.
