Tata Motors has been in the news for the past several months first for world cheapest car the Nano and later for acquiring British brands the Jaguar and Land Rover. It has climbed the charts of global auto makers. But that was not the only development that has happened for Tata Motors.
The models Indica and Indigo have been given a facelift. They have been installed with the fuel efficient common rail direct injection or DICOR system on all the diesel engines. Industry experts say that the fuel efficiency has significantly increased and refinement has been improved. Tata was breathless with the pace of new launches such as the
Sumo Grande, Indigo CS, Indica Dicor and Safari Dicor since January.
Let’s look into Indigo and Indica models before and after the improvements.
Tata has worked on exterior and improved the paint work finish. In fact the finish matches the premium
sedans. It shows more on the Indigo than the smaller Indica. The exterior now give smooth looks.
Indigo CS: The Indigo has a new sibling the Indigo CS or compact sedan. The car retains its sedan design but is shorter than 4 meters. This will help the car gain excise reduction applicable for cars measuring within 4 meters of length. The compact sedan is also one of the cheapest entry level sedans in India. It is actually cheaper than premium hatchback like Maruti Suzuki and Skoda Fabia. The car prices start from Rs 4.54 lakhs (ex-showroom Delhi).
The Indigo CS gives a fuel efficiency of 68bhp at 4500 rpm and a maximum torque of 13.76 kgm at 2500 rpm. The 1.4 liter turbocharged and intercooled diesel engine is mated with 5 speed manual gear box.
The front wheels get an independent Mcpherson Strut and the rear wheels suspension gets independent 3-link strut with anti-roll bar. The body weight has been reduced by 25 kgs.
The Indica Dicor: It has become more responsive and sprints forward with a slight push. The Dicor engine churns out 69 bhp power and gives a mileage of 12 kmpl in city and 16 kmpl on highway.
The powertrains feel smooth and refinement is quite impressive. The car is able to absorb a lot of bumps making the ride quality better. The greatest improvement has been in the area of gear shift. The low speed high gear driving is very easy to achieve. The interiors look brighter and feel better. It is the right car for people who want value for money.
Sumo Grande: The new Sumo Grande does not resemble the boxy Sumo in any features. The Sumo Grande, which is truly the second generation of Tata’s flagship model Sumo. The diesel version comes equipped with the common rail direct injection or Dicor. It has derived its 2.2L dicor engine from
Tata Safari, which churns out 118bhp at 4000 rpm. The Sumo Grande is very contemporary with urban looks. The designing department has worked very hard to get the modern touch.
All these cars have been made to compete with the international brands like Chevrolet, Hyundai and General Motors. Tata has made fabulous changes to suit the modern buyers. It has even improved the re-sale value in market.
