Revolutionary Honda City Sweeps 2009 Awards

The Honda City not only won hearts but also three different automotive awards in 2009. Read about the awards and then the car itself.

bullet Viewers Choice Award for 2009 and Best Design    and Styling Award for 2009

The All-New Honda City was the centre of attraction at the UTVi-Autocar award event held at the Taj Lands End in Mumbai on 7th Jan 09. India's top-most automotive majors participated at the event organized jointly by UTVi and Autocar India. The UTVi Autocar Awards are presented to the most eligible cars after meticulously evaluating all the new cars in the Indian automotive market. There are a host of categories starting from variants (number of choices) to looks, and from innovation to affordability, covering all aspects of Indian automotive needs.

The Honda City with its head-turning looks bagged the Viewers Choice Award and the Best Car Design and Styling Award in its Car Category at the UTVi-Autocar awards this year. The new Honda City's appealing advanced sporty styling with an arrow-head design cut through the competition for a well deserved trophy.

bullet Business Standard Motoring Car of the Year 2009

The sporty design is not the only arena where the new City excels, it also has some other interesting features to win the hearts of millions. The new Honda City was awarded the Business Standard Motoring Car of the Year 2009 for its path breaking performance, safety, comfort, driving dynamics, fuel consumption, and design. The City outshone all other participants and to receive this oldest automotive honour in the country. These awards have been continuously announced since 1996, when the Mercedes-Benz E-Class (W124) won the title. This is not the first time that City is winning this prestigious award; it received this award in 2004 also.

bullet The New Third-gen Honda City

The amazing new looks have won accolades for the mid-sized 2009 Honda City sedan. Honda gives European-inspired sharp and radical styling to the new Honda City with the intent of appealing to a more sophisticated audience. The prominent centre grille has been designed taking cues from the European Civic. The all new Honda City makes a dynamic statement of style wherever it goes with the Arrow Shot design responsible for the refined aerodynamics of the car.

bullet On The Outside

The front face of the car has a prominent three-slat grille and a pair of headlamps with large Honda stamps. The grille gives a very distinctive bold European look. The headlamps with turn indicators extend to the wheel arches, making the car look wider than it actually is. At the rear, the new City gets a pair of clear-lens tail lamps and the boot-lid features an integrated spoiler lip. The new third-gen City also features body-coloured grab-type door handles and new, sleeker door mirrors. The rear view mirrors have been made bigger and squarer to improve rear visibility.

The new City also features a new chassis structure, which is a bit larger than the previous model. It offers increased interior space with an extended wheelbase. The new City is 4,420 mm long (5 mm longer than the previous model), 1,695 mm wide (5 mm more), and 1,480 mm high (15 mm lower).

The new Honda City offers a fine blend of stimulating style, sophisticated design, improved performance, and unparalleled safety.

bullet Under The Hood

The Honda City comes in two petrol variants - E and S, equipped with a 1.5-litre i-VTEC engine that churns out 116 bhp of power. The i-VTEC engine is designed for all-round performance to deliver high output, good fuel economy, and eco-friendly performance. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard on both E and S, while S also offers a choice of a 5-speed automatic transmission with paddle shift. The unique paddle shift gear option allows the driver to switch gears without using the clutch pedal. The 5-speed automatic transmission allows changing gear ratios automatically. The right paddle is for shifting up while the left paddle is for shifting down, which is the same on an F1 machine. The All New City has a smoother wire type manual transmission gear shift with hydraulic clutch. As compared to a rod-type, a wire-type operating system offers a much smoother gear shift. The gear shift has good moderate stiffness and the clutch utilizes hydraulic pressure to reduce the force needed during operation, thus providing a fatigue-free driving experience.

These unique features of the new third generation Honda City make it a revolution rather than an evolution. The City has already won a number of awards and we can expect many more in the year ahead.
