The Indian car market has come a long way since its inception in the late 1940s. Initially, Indian car manufacturers were contingent upon the international market for new and technologies. But today, India has emerged as a strong player in the automobile industry in terms of technology, design, and creativity and Indian car manufacturers are held in high respect by the global community.

Some of the top car manufacturers in India are Maruti Suzuki, Hindustan Motors, Tata Motors, and Mahindra & Mahindra along with many foreign car manufacturers that have registered themselves in the top ranking lists. Toyota, Ford, Suzuki, Skoda, Hyundai, Honda, and General Motors are a few of them.

bullet  Maruti Suzuki

Maruti Udyog Ltd. (MUL) was born in the year 1981. Since 2004, the company has manufactured more than 5 million cars. Maruti cars are very popular among the price conscious Indian populace due to their affordability and are believed to revolutionize the Indian car industry. Later, the company was re-christened as Maruti Suzuki in 2001 when it entered a joint venture with Suzuki. The company sells around 500,000 cars per year with a wide array of models: 800, Gypsy, Omni, Alto, WagonR, Grand Vitara, Swift, Grand Vitara, Zen Estilo, Grand Vitara, Versa, SX4, and Swift DZiRE.

Tata Motors Ltd. is a multinational car company with its headquarters in Mumbai. Established in 1945, Tata Motors is the first automobile company listed on the New York Stock Exchange. It’s the country's largest company in terms of commercial and passenger automobile production. Their acquisition of premium brands Jaguar & Land Rover has further added pride to the Indian car market. Hindustan Motors Ltd. (HML) was founded by Mr. B. M. Birla in 1942. It’s the creator of the famous Ambassador car - the king of the yesteryears that was widely used as a taxicab and as government limousine. Hindustan Motors in a joint venture with Mitsubishi has gifted many car models to India. The product line of HML: Ambassador and several cars from Mitsubishi - Cedia, Lancer, Montero, Outlander, and Pajero.

Formed in 1996, Hyundai Motors India Ltd. (HMIL) is owned by Korean car manufacturer Hyundai Motor Company. It’s one of the fastest growing car companies in India. It’s also the second largest passenger car exporter. The company produces the following models: Accent, Getz Prime, Santro Xing, Sonata Embera, Tucson, Verna, and i10.

General Motors made its entry into the Indian car market in partnership with CK Birla Group of Companies in the year 1994. It became a fully owned subsidiary of GM in 1999 and converted from a Public Limited company to a Private Limited company. Now the company is a wholly-owned subsidiary of General Motors Corporation. Today it has well established itself in the Indian market with popular car models like: Aveo, Aveo U-VA, Captiva, Optra Magnum, Optra SRV, Spark, and Tavera.

Honda Siel Cars India Ltd. is a joint venture of Honda Motor Co. Ltd. and Siel Ltd. The company manufactures luxury and premium cars in India. Ford came to India in 1907 with the launch of model ‘A’ car but was later discontinued in 1954. It resumed in 1995 and established as Mahindra Ford India Ltd. The Toyota Kirloskar Motor Ltd. is a joint venture company of Kirloskar Group and Toyota Motor Corp. established in October 1997. Toyota Quails was the first car launched from the house of Toyota Kirloskar Motor Ltd. in India in 2000, followed by Toyota Camry in 2002, the Toyota Corolla in 2003, and the Toyota Innova in 2005. Other car models in the lineup are: Corolla Altis, Innova, and Land Cruiser Prado.
