Tips to Drive at Night

Driving at night needs more skill than driving by the day. People should always be extra - cautious while driving at night. As per the National Safety Council, traffic death rates are three-fold while compared to the traffic related deaths during the day. In spite of this large number in the death rates, people are still unaware of the measures to be taken while driving during the night and what needs to be done if something goes wrong, rather than complaining about bad luck.

It is very evident that the darkness is a major factor that makes driving at night more dangerous. One should not only be careful about the way they drive, but there are certain other factors too that needs to be taken care of while driving at night. During the night, vision becomes limited leaving the drivers unaware of things that might be just in front of them. Under the cover of darkness, it would be very difficult to determine the objects at what proximity they are to the vehicle. Old drivers need to really careful as they would find it difficult to see things properly and might find it very stressful for the eyes to drive at night. For that matter not only old, but people with poor eye sight will also find it really difficult to drive during night.

People tend to go for long distance drives during the night because they want to cover a long distance at a short period of time as the traffic would be comparatively less during the wee hours, but driving at a high speed can also cause accidents. More accidents take place on weekend nights compared to other days of a week because of the careless driving as most of them will be in a relaxing mood.

Doesn’t it seem to be really confusing and scary? Well, actually it is not what it looks like and you can really be very safe if you are a little careful and do not underestimate driving at night.
  • Before going for a night drive always get your car ready for it by cleaning the tail lights, windows, headlights, and signal lights. Unclean glass will not give the passengers a clear outside view.
  • People tend to drink during night and sometimes just a single drink can take you away from your senses. So if drunk do not ever drive. Because it might hamper one’s ability to drive and make you feel really depressed. If drunk ask someone else to drive the vehicle and by doing so you might be saving yourselves from an accident. Drinking can also cause fatigue.
  • Not only does drinking, but smoking is also not advisable during night drive. The smoke contains nicotine and carbon monoxide which will not give a clear vision during night.
  • Aim the headlight of the vehicle suitably so that it will not tamper your vision and blind other drivers. And the light from the headlight should be falling on the road and not on the face of the driver who is coming in the opposite direction.

  • It is very easy to fall sleepy during night drives. It is always better to stop for some time, drink or eat something and continue the travel. If you feel the place is safe and you can park the car in the road and get some good sleep. Never stop doing it thinking you are wasting time, in fact you will be saving yourself and others from an accident. And if there is a co-passenger, he could also drive for some time. It should be always noted that the co-passenger, if any, should drive the car for some time, if the driver is sleepy or at least be talking to the driver.
  • It is always safe to drive watching the right edge of the road rather than glaring, which will not certainly help if an oncoming vehicle doesn't lower beams from high to low.
  • Always reduce the speed of the car. Always be careful to increase the following distance between other vehicles as it would be very difficult to judge the distance and fastness of an object at night.
  • Be careful to lower the head light beam when necessary otherwise it might blind the oncoming driver. It is also necessary to switch on the headlights when you are uncertain of what you are seeing. And try not to overdrive your headlights which will make it impossible for you to stop inside the illuminated area
  • It is not safe to keep driving if the car has any trouble so stop the car where ever you find it safe and can get help. It will be really unsafe to stop in an isolated area. And when you park the car, park it as far as possible from the road. And use hazard lights to warn other vehicles. Be always careful to not stay on the road as you will not be visible to the other drivers at night.
  • Try to honk less while driving at night, but you can always horn to wake up a sleeping driver!
It is hard to not only drive in night, but it is also difficult to drive in twilight as eyes find it difficult to the growing darkness.
