A Touch of Royalty - British Car Brands

When we talk about global luxury cars, invariably flashy German BMWs and Audi cars run through our minds. But there have been quite some luxury automobile items that have originated from the British land too. These brands are quite prominent in the global luxury car scenario.

Here we bring to you some of the most fascinating British luxury car brands. These cars have been featured a number of times in James Bond movies and other television serials.

bullet Aston Martin

Aston Martin Based in Gaydon, Warwickshire, Aston Martin has been manufacturing luxury sports car for about nine decades now and is as British as the Queen of England herself. Aston Martin was founded in 1913 by Lionel Martin and Robert Bamford. They acquired land at Henniker Place in Kensington and produced their first car in March 1915. Hoever, production of the car could not start because of the World War I, and while Martin joined the Admiralty, Bamford joined the Royal Army Service Corps. All machinery was sold to the Sopwith Aviation Company.

After the war, the duo returned and the company restarted at Abingdon Road, Kensington. They designed a new car that carried the Aston Martin name. That was the beginning and since then, the company has manufactured a number of incredibly stylish supercars including the DB9 and the Vanquish. Aston Martin has stood the test of time and that can be accounted to its British lineage.

bullet Jaguar

Jaguar Jaguar was founded initially, in 1922, as the Swallow Sidecar Company by two motorcycling enthusiasts. Before switching to passenger cars, the company manufactured motorcycle sidecars. Swallow Sidecar Company came to be known as SS Jaguar before the entire company was rechristened to The Jaguar in 1945. Ford Motor Company bought the famous luxury car brand in 1989 and then sold it to the Indian carmaker, Tata Motors, in March 2008.

Jaguar brand has always been associated with highest degree of luxury, class and sophistication. In its history of about eight decades, Jaguar has showcased large executive and compact executive saloons, racing cars and concept cars. The current Jaguar models include Jaguar XF, Jaguar XJ and Jaguar XK. The fact that Jaguar is now owned by an Indian carmaker does not hamper the British royalty that has been always associated with it.

bullet Rolls Royce

Rolls Royce In 1884, Henry Royce started an electrical and mechanical business and he made his first car, a two-cylinder Royce 10, in his Manchester factory in 1904. Later in the year, he met Charles Rolls who agreed to take all the cars that Royce made and sell them under the Rolls Royce brand. Some of the vehicles launched by the Rolls Royce are the Silver Spur, the Phantom series and the Ghost series.

Currently a subsidiary of the German BMW group, Rolls Royce continues to be known as the car of millionaires - classic, large vehicles that are often used as limousines. Rolls Royce carries the British heritage even today and produces exclusive and expensive models like the Phantom that remains an immediate favorite of international celebrities like P Diddy, 50 Cents and Amitabh Bachchan.

bullet Lotus

Lotus Lotus Cars was formed in 1952 by engineer Colin Chapman. Lotus produces not only road cars but also racing cars. The range of Lotus sports cars include Elise and Exige and are well known for being small yet fast supercars. The current range of Lotus cars includes Lotus Elise, Lotus Eco Elise, Lotus Europa S and Lotus Evora among a few others.

The company was bought by General Motors in 1986. In 1993, GM sold the company to A.C.B.N. Holdings S.A., a company owned by Romano Artioli, who also owned Bugatti. In 1996, majority of the Lotus shares were sold to a Malaysian company, Proton. However, no one can miss the British looks and effect of Lotus cars.

bullet Land Rover

Land Rover The first Land Rover was designed in 1948 in the United Kingdom by Maurice Wilks. Originally Land Rover referred to one specific vehicle, an all-terrain utility vehicle that was launched on 30 April 1948, at the Amsterdam Motor Show. But later it came to be used as a brand for many different models, and they were all capable of four-wheel drive.

Land Rover started as a model in the Rover Company's product portfolio and, as the brand developed, it became a different company and started manufacturing exclusive four-wheel drive vehicles.

The current line-up of Land Rovers includes Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Freelander 2, Discovery 4 and Defender. Since its purchase by Ford, Land Rover has been associated with the Jaguar brand. In March 2008, Tata Motors purchased the very British Land Rover from Ford but still is produced in U.K.

bullet MINI

MINI Since its inception in 1959, the original Mini motorcar was produced by the British Motor Corporation (BMC) in England. The cars were originally sold under the BMC's Austin and Morris brand names; the Mini name didn't make an appearance until 1961. Mini has been immensely popular among the masses and has continuously amazed car enthusiasts with its various production and concept cars.

Throughout the 60s, 70s and 80s, Mini continued to be in good business and produced more than 5 million cars. In 1994, Mini was acquired by the German BMW group. However, Mini can still boast about its British history. Currently, Mini is available in four body variants: Hardtop, Convertible, Clubman (estate) and Countryman (crossover).
