Indian summer can be a hard task master for cars. Preparing for summer is almost like preparing for war. But don't be disheartened that India is worst hit. Deserts in America, Australia, Africa and Middle East can tire you out.
But there are certain similarities that a car preparation requires in all hot climates including India. But some small checks and aids can save you from trouble during summer. Check some parameter before you plan a long drive on summer holidays.
Air-conditioning
Service the air conditioner before the advent of summer. Ensure that the thermostat, blower and compressor are functioning properly. Get it serviced by qualified technicians. Air conditioning can use at least 50 percent of the power generated by the engine. It affects your fuel efficiency. The best way to get more mileage will be to switch on the AC and let it cool the cabin. Then switch it off and allow the fan to circulate air. You can repeat this periodically during the drive.
Emergency Kit
Carry enough water for your journey. Water will cool down your body. Water is important during events like overheating. It is also helpful to carry torch with additional batteries, a full tool kit and a first aid kit with fresh set of medicines and bandages. Carry a fully charged mobile phone with all emergency numbers stored in it to contact immediately. Also carry enough food that can last for the entire duration of your journey.
Tyres
Check the car tyres with respect to unevenness or excessive tread wear. Also check out the pressure in the tyres. Ensure that all tyres including the spare one are inflated properly before you embark on a long journey.
Belts and Hoses
There are lots of parts under the hood that will need a thorough checking in summer. Check if the belts have cracked or worn out. Belts can even have blisters and soften due to high temperature in the engine compartment.
Fluids and Motor Oil
Make sure that there is proper 50/50 mixture of water and coolant in engine compartment. Overheating is a common problem in summer. Antifreeze/coolant level and condition of engine have to be checked with respect to proper functioning.
Ensure that you put in motor oil with high viscosity in order to travel through blazing weathers. Make sure that your car is properly serviced and tell the technician to prepare it for summer.
Long drives in summer can be fun, but make sure that the spirit is not dampened by car problems.
