AC is a must for Indian summer

Driving in Indian summer is almost impossible without an air conditioner in the car. Due to global warming, the atmospheric temperature is increasing every year and meteorological departments continue to give higher warm temperatures stats. In this scenario AC has become an inevitable car accessory.

There are different types of AC available in the market. They can be broadly classified into three categories as basic model, HVAC and automatic.

bullet Basic model (Unidirectional Blower)

This is just a cooler with a simple, uni-directional blower unit. The cold air blows out only from the dashboard which only gives relief to the driver. This was one of the oldest ACs available in India.

bullet Basic model (Multi-flow Blower)

This model is a little advanced compared to the previous one. The cooler comes with multi-directional vents which cool the entire cabin. This system helps in faster cooling. It was fitted in all cars manufactured in the early 90s.

bullet HVAC

HVAC, expanded as Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning is available in two types. The unidirectional blower was famous for less duration and was fitted in some SUVs. However, the multi-directional blower soon became popular as an after market accessory. HVACs are also available with multi-blower which is fitted in several modern cars.

bullet Automatic AC

This system has sensors that detect outside temperature, engine's water temperature and other related stuff. The information is quickly analysed and displayed for driver information. The blower speed and cool air outflow is automatically controlled. Hence, the cabin is always cooler. Automatic AC is offered as an add-on by most car manufacturers.

bullet Using an AC

Before switching on the AC, turn the air vents on and roll down the windows. The temperature in the cabin will always be higher than outside. After a few minutes, when the cabin is cooler, roll up the windows, shut off the vents and switch on the AC.

bullet Driving with an AC:

The air conditioning functions best when the engine runs fast. It is directly proportionate to the engine rpm. Driving slowly will heat up the AC and lower its performance.

Frost in evaporator: Frost or icing is formed when the AC is set at its lowest for long hours. The evaporator gets clogged with icing and air circulation is stopped. This results in drop of blower speeds and rise in cabin temperature.

Setting the AC as per passenger seating will cool the required space only. If there are more than two passengers, the blower should be directed through the centre of the dashboard for rear seat passengers. Installing an AC for the rear seat passengers is more useful.

Getting an air conditioner fitted is easy. But the driver/owner should also take care to maintain the AC and have periodical servicing done in order to prevent clogging by dust and other particles. This will ensure cool driving for several years to come!
