The Black and White about CNG and LPG Fuels

The most widely accepted concepts of greener fuel are CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) and LPG (Liquid Petroleum Gas) gases.
LPG powered cars have been with us for a long time. Maruti Suzuki WagonR was also made ready to be fitted with an LPG cylinder. Maruti has now launched the LPG-powered Maruti Omni. People get their cars fitted with an LPG kit mainly to reduce fuel costs rather than save the environment. CNG is considered to be the better and more environment-friendly of the two fuels. The central government has stressed that all public transportation including buses and autos should be run on CNG. This rule has already been implemented in cities like New Delhi, Mumbai, and Hyderabad.

LPG is liquid gas and easily combustible, whereas CNG is lighter and dissipates into the air quickly. Therefore, CNG cars are considered to be much safer than LPG cars. Further, CNG leaves no residue or hydrocarbons when it is engaged in combustion to propel the car because CNG is a dry gas that does not dilute the lubricating oil in the engine. This helps increase the life of the engine and prevents frequent changing of oil filters. A CNG-powered engine does not need any tuning until it has crossed 70,000 to 80,000 km in mileage.

LPG is generally better accepted by the masses compared to CNG, because it can be easily re-fuelled. The LPG cylinder is available everywhere and you have to worry less about searching for a re-fuelling outlet. Even cylinder with little fuel continues to give good amount of power and the car performance remains stable. On the other hand, the car performance decreases by 15 percent when the gas quantity in the CNG cylinder reduces. A CNG cylinder takes three times more space than that required for an LGP kit.

Regardless of the minor drawbacks of an CNG/LPG fuel system, these fuel types have emission ratings that cut down on harmful emissions by two-thirds when compared to car fossil fuel emissions from petrol and diesel fuel types.

Several manufacturers are yet to get used to the idea of LPG or CNG powered cars. There are small cars in India with LPG/CNG options available, but the larger mid-size sedans and luxury cars still maintain petrol/diesel fuel sources.
