August Horch founded the company in 1899, and the
Audi luxury car brand is named after the founder’s last name Horch, which has the same meaning in translation. Audi is a German company that has specialised in the manufacturing of luxury cars. The corporate tagline of the company is Advantage through Technology but uses different taglines at different regions. The company has plants in many parts of the world including India, Brazil, Germany, and China.
The company has had a history of great happenings. To begin with, in 1909, less than eight years from the company’s first automobile product came out, Horch, the founder of the company was forced to leave the company. Matters did not end there, the company went through a chain of incidents where it was taken oven, reorganized, and changed the ownership. It was taken over by Mercedes and then by Volkswagen, and this happened within a span of ten years. The first car that came out with the Audi label is a 2.6 litre, four cylinder model, and by launching the Audi Type K, in 1921, it became the first German car to have a left-hand drive.
The four overlapping rings, the emblem of the brand, represent the four companies of the Auto Union namely Audi, DKW, Horch, and Wanderer, which came together in 1932. The logo, which now appears on all the models of Audi, initially appeared only on the racing cars of the Auto Union. Audi 100 is a model that was extremely successful, and this was followed by a series of models such as Audi 80, Audi 50. Through the years the brand has developed and now it is among the well known and successful automakers of the world, which uses advanced technology and style. Audi started the sales of its models in the Indian market in 2004 as a division of the Volkswagen Group, and it remains as one among the other major luxury brands of the country. The Company, which was primarily manufacturing aircraft engines, manufactured the world’s first jet plane engine. But it also started the production of motorcycles in 1920, four years after it was founded. And in 1928, it started the production of automobiles. Like any other German car brands it is famous for its looks and high quality performance. BMW is also the parent company of Rolls Royce.
After the Second World War, the company stopped producing aircraft engines and shifted its interest into the production of small cars. In spite of leaving aside the production of aircraft engines its emblem still symbolises the movements of the airplane propeller. It was not a smooth sailing for BMW. In 1959, the company was on the verge of bankruptcy, but its decision was to find a way to carry on the business and rejected any plans of liquidation.
It acquired the rights to manufacture the Italian micro car Iso Isetta, which proved to be the right decision at that time and it was soon able to retain a stable position. BMW was, for a short time, the owner of the MG and Rover but had to sell it over as it was making a large amount of loss, but it still owns and produces the MINI, a British automobile brand. In the worldwide market, the BMW started producing automobiles with the new Class models, which was followed by a huge series of cars such as the 1 Series, 3 Series, 7 Series, to name a few.
BMW in India, has a plant in Chennai and has been producing the 3 Series and 5 Series since 2007. The 6 Series coupe, M5 sedan, X3, and M6 convertibles are some among the twelve models that are been launched in India by BMW. BMW is one among the famous and most accepted luxury brands of the country, it adorns the number one position in the luxury car segment, pushing behind Mercedes and Audi.
