Art of Car Designing

Car designing is mainly defined as an art of developing visual aesthetics of a car. The art is performed by expert car designers who have the in-depth knowledge of industrial design.

The primary aim of car design is to produce a car that is aerodynamically efficient without any comprise on the engine technology. In the olden days, the theme of designing a car was restricted since cars were merely viewed as a mode of transport, but today, the concept has totally changed. Today, car designs have become an extension of the car owner’s personality. The paradigm shift of theme resulted in the introduction of a course in Transportation and Automobile Design. One of the pioneers of this course is Mr Dilip Chhabria who is well-renowned in the Indian car market as well as the international market for designing visually aesthetic cars. Till date, he has designed more than 50 designer cars including the red sports car showcased in Yash Chopra's “Dil To Pagal Hai” Bollywood flick. Dilip has also designed a number of cars with high visual appeal for many Indian stars.

The modern day car designs are handled by a large group of talented designers and engineers who divide the entire process in two different categories: exterior design and interior design. A combination of car exterior and car interior makes one complete car sketch. Apart from the major exterior and interior designing, other designers are involved in designing intricacies of the car such as rear lights, steering wheels, gearshifts, fabrics, leather, and trims.

Design of the car exterior mainly includes shape, surface, and proportion of the car. The basic structure is sketched by a series of digital or manual drawings. After execution and approval, these designs are further molded into clay or industrial plasticine models or digital models to give a complete picture of the car’s body structure. Then, it goes under the industrialization process to create a full sized mock-up of the final car body design. This mock-up is prepared in white and then as per the standards and instructions by car manufacturers various colours are painted to adorn the car structure.

Further to the car body structure, emphasis is laid on other exterior car parts like the shape of the headlights, rear light clusters, bonnet trims, and a rainbow of colours for different exterior parts.

Car interiors are designed with a great deal of detail and perfection. To design the car interiors, the first step is to develop the proportion, shape, placement, and surfaces of various car accessories. After that according to the designed shape and surfaces, various accessories like instrument panel, seats, door trim panels, pillar trims, headliner, interior lights, gearshift, and steering wheel are ardently decorated in the car interiors. For car interiors, most of the designers take inspiration from the fashion industry and home furnishing. Interior design also includes various shades and colours used to beautify the car ambience.

Currently, General Motors and Renault have their own car design centers in India. Soon, Pininfarina is also aiming to set up a design center in the country to design a pack of affordable and fuel-efficient cars. Gradually, as the trend increases, more and more numbers of design centers are expected to hit the Indian car market.
