Safe Driving Tips: Antidote for a Long Life

Safe Driving Tips: Antidote for a Long Life
New generation cars are teamed with innovative and advanced technology that includes a wider aspect of safety measures. Unfortunately, this advancement in technology is not successful in reducing the mortality rate. Researches have estimated that a number of more than 70,000 people are killed annually due to accidents on Indian roads, out of which 25% of the fatalities are found on National Highways that only comprises 2% of Indian roads.

The key factors contributing to the increasing number of fatalities on roads are high speed, overtaking and alcoholism. Exceeding the speed limit, restless overtaking and driving with a bottle of alcohol is equal to committing a suicide. The best way to add more number of years to life is to follow the traffic rules, road regulations and safe driving tips. Some of the essential and safe driving tips are mentioned below.

The legal speed of a passenger car is about 55 kmph and one should learn to drive within the speed limit. Cruising at higher speed distorts the perception of turning, braking and halting because the brain is unable to cope up and accept the rapidly changing factors, eventually, leading to fatality. A car driving at a high speed of about 70-80 kmph stops at a comparatively larger distance from the actual stopping point. It’s good to slow down the car speed before stopping. Sudden stopping or slowing down can endanger the cars and other vehicles behind. Drivers must have an estimate of the minimum distance required to stop the car so that they can respond quickly to the any unexpected danger.

Overtaking should always be done from the right side of the roads. The driver who overtakes should give a signal in the form of horn or flashing the headlights prior to overtaking and the driver who is being overtaken should not obstruct the way. Overtake only after the car being overtake gives a signal. Check safety levels before overtaking because overtaking in certain cases can be dangerous. If there is bend or corner in the front or if the road is not cleared, overtaking should be prohibited.

Drinking while driving and driving after drinking are the most dangerous manoeuvers. Driving under the influence of intoxication or alcoholism often break the concentration. It also numbs the sensations, blur the vision, obstructing the decision making capability and allowing lesser time to respond to unexpected changes. This eventually affects the driving adeptness and insight.

Some of the other safety driving tips include:

  • Wearing of safety belts, using correct indications while turning, slow reversing and safe lane changing. Wearing safety belts is important to keep the driver safe in case of sudden jerks or a minor accident.

  • Every car and other vehicles have indicator lights that must be used while turning left or right. The indicator helps in signaling the vehicle behind and makes the turn safer. Be more cautious while turning right because this needs an eye to the incoming traffic. Maintain a safe gap before taking the turn and give the indication at least 30 meters prior to the turn.

  • Slow reversing is also important for safe driving. There are many vehicles and pedestrians sharing the same tarmac. To avoid any kind of obstruction and mis-happening, watch out carefully before reversing.

  • Swinging over from one lane to another should also be avoided because that increases the number of fatalities on Indian roads. It is very essential to maintain a safe distance before changing lanes.

Remember, safe driving tips can be an antidote to a long life, transforming tips to safety and well being.
