“Going Green” – A concept turned reality?

“Going Green”, as a concept, is yet to pick up in the automobile industry. The sector that contributes to more than 50 percent of the overall pollution in the urban populace is the Indian car industry that has not yet moved to green mode, because shifting to eco-friendly cars is not easy.
The Indian government is partly responsible for the slow-progress in the “Going Green” concept. In 1997, electric vehicles were given a subsidy of Rs 1.05 Lakh, which was stopped by the government suddenly. It was reintroduced in 2002 but with a subsidy cut of 33% compared to the previous plan. This new subsidy plan was made applicable only to hospitals, educational institutions, tourism, archeological sites, and public sector undertakings.

Many eco-friendly car manufacturers like Mr. Girish M Rakhe, President of REVAi India, feel that there is not enough awareness among Indians about the environmental hazards that petrol or diesel-based vehicles cause including the draining of natural resources. India, like China, is a large consumer market that can surge the growth of electric and other eco-friendly vehicles with the help of the government.

Providing country-wide infrastructure and good tax and excise cuts on eco-friendly cars should be a strong step forward in the right direction by the government. This coupled with technological advancements will ensure that electric and eco-friendly cars see a boom better than any other fuel segment in vehicles.

Research & Development facilities set up all around the country are currently trying to develop electric and environment-friendly car components that seem to be the future of a greener tomorrow. Hydrogen-based vehicles to replace current public transports are another option that is heavily being researched. A five to ten year “Going Green” plan implemented by the Indian government in the not-so-distant future is just the sort of initiative that most car manufacturers in India are looking forward to seeing.
