Mahindra and Mahindra (
M&M) is a leading
SUV automaker in India. In 1949, M&M began assembling jeeps and later expanded its hold by starting up a manufacturing plant for jeeps under the license Kaiser Jeep and later American Motors (AMC). They also involved themselves in the making of tractors and light commercial vehicles (LCVs). By 2005 they were tagged as one of the leading SUV makers with great financial success.
Today, Mahindra is all set up to help Indian soldiers serve the country better by introducing a first-of-its-kind high mobility Indian multipurpose Jeep-type vehicle called Humvee/Axe. It is specifically designed for military usage, as per Indian Army specifications, and is equipped with great off-road capabilities. This rugged, tough, and muscular looking Axe is capable of cruising through any terrain and is the typical ‘desi’ version of the world-wide coveted Hummer. Currently, the Indian defense is performing tests on the Axe in its base camp.
Axe will be available in a petrol version for all Special Forces in foreign countries, while the Indian version will come with a 2.7-litre diesel variant that might churn out power ranging from 150 bhp to 300 bhp to 400 bhp. Initially, M&M will import the engines and later it will be enhanced with home-grown Mahindra engines. The transmission used is from one of the
Mercedes-Benz models (most probably a 5-speed manual). The highlight of the Axe model is its high-tech all-wheel independent suspension system. M&M is expected to bring out the civilian version of the Axe with an automatic transmission by 2009 with a price tag ranging from Rs 12 Lakh to Rs 22 Lakh.
This is not all; Mahindra has offered to set up a new plant called Mahindra Special Military Vehicles Ltd. that will supply vehicles for Indian military use as per their requirements and specifications.
