10 Car Makers to Watch in India in 2010

The New Year has set in. It is a good time to look back at the automotive movers and shakers that defined the previous year. These top 10 manufacturers managed to capture the news in a year fraught with uncertainty and anguish. They are also the ones most likely to continue to make the news in 2010.

bullet Maruti Suzuki

The car company is able to retain its top position in the Indian car market. With the advent of the New Year, Maruti Suzuki is busy at the Auto Expo displaying its products. It will be displaying seventeen products at the auto fair under the theme ‘Joys of Life’. The car maker will be launching the replacement of the Versa MPV by a new family car christened as the Eeco. It also promises to roll out the Kizashi and the Grand Vitara with a diesel engine. The WagonR and its flagship model Alto will be reintroduced to the market with a new K-Series heart. Besides, the Cervo and the Jimny from Maruti Suzuki stable are expected to make an India debut some time this year.

bullet Tata Motors

Tata Motors set its journey in the automotive world with trucks and pickups. With the change of tide, it became a key player in the SUV segment and small car segment with the ubiquitous Indica. Last year, the car maker presented the Indians with the world?s cheapest car, the Nano, and also brought in the top-notch Jaguar and Land Rover cars to the domestic car market. This year, the car major has big plans to launch the luxury sedan Prima and the world car, Aria as well as the Magic Iris passenger car. It is also planning a hybrid version of the Nano and an electric Indica Vista.

bullet Hyundai

This Korean eleven-year old company operating in India has become country?s largest car exporter in 2009. It also made its mark by introducing the stylish i20 hatchback. This year, Hyundai will be busy with the electric version of its flagship model i10. Apart from that, Hyundai Motors India will make some noise with the launch of the much-awaited i30, Santa Fe, Genesis, Avante and the replacement for the Tucson, ix35.

World's largest car maker of 2009, Toyota, has declared to foray into the small car segment of India. The car maker has previewed the small car Etios and the sedan version of the same at the 2010 Auto Expo. Its Indian arm, Toyota Kirloskar Motors, has been very fortunate with the launch of the Fortuner last year. It has also introduced the Corolla Altis and the Land Cruiser Prado with a diesel engine. This year, the car maker is all set to make its mark in the Indian car industry with the Yaris, Avanza, Prius hybrid and a diesel version of its premium sedan Corolla Altis.

bullet Volkswagen

German car maker Volkswagen is out on the prowl to attack the Indian car bazaar with its slew of launches. Last year, it has driven in the iconic Beetle to India. This year it will come out with the Polo hatchback followed by a sedan version. The Up! is anticipated with the Scirocco, Tiguan and Phaeton in 2010. This European car maker will also introduce a dozen of other models under its brands. Skoda will bring in the Fabia Combi, Skoda Yeti, Fabia Scout as well as the Roomster and launch a facelifted Octavia. Audi will roll out the A5 and the R8 Spyder and Lamborghini is likely to come out with the Gallardo LP560/4. Bentley will introduce the Continental GT Speed and the Mulsanne some time in 2010.

The beleaguered car maker learned that the Indian car market is promising when Detroit was melting, thanks to economic decay. General Motors has spearheaded the car launches in 2010 with the inauguration of the Chevrolet Beat. Under its Chevrolet brand, the America car honcho is all ready to shine in the Indian car market with the Lumina, Volt and the Spark 800. In the month of September of last year, this car maker joined hands with India?s REVA Electric Car Company to bring out electric cars. Moreover, in October, it had admitted in the Chevy Cruze to cruise in India.

bullet Nissan

Japanese car major Nissan will march in the Micra and the Pixo small car along with three exciting SUVs- the Murano, Qashqai and Qazana. This Japanese car maker with its French partner will drive in a Low-Cost-Car (LCC) for India and will make for the Megane sedan. At present, this Japanese car maker offers only two cars in India, the luxury off-roader X-Trail and the high-end luxury sedan, the Teana.

bullet Renault

French car maker Renault will usher in the Sandero and the Fluence. Along with its Indian counterpart, Mahindra & Mahindra, it is all set to launch a new version of the Logan named Logan Tourer. The unsuccessful Logan will also get anew LPG heart in 2010. Renault has unveiled its concept car Twizy ZE at the Delhi Auto Show.

bullet Ford

Ford India has previewed its small car Figo in Indian last year. This year, it will launch the Figo by the first quarter of 2010. The company will also bring in the Focus and the Mondeo along with the New Fiesta hatchback. Last year, Ford introduced only facelifted versions of its existing models in India such as the Endeavour, Ikon and Fiesta.

This Italian car maker has a long history in India. Last year, it unleashed the big small car, the Grande Punto. It also bestowed the Indians with the alluring Linea sedan. This year, it promises to wow the car lovers with the Bravo and Alfa Romeo cars. It is also expected to flag off the Ferrari and Maserati brands in the Indian soil. Moreover, along with its partner Tata Motors it will pave way for the Jeep Cherokee to invade Indian terrain.
