Mercedes-Benz BlueZero Concept - Step Ahead to Green Future

Mercedes-Benz BlueZero Concept - Step Ahead to Green Future
The automobile industry today is facing great challenges in terms of stringent emission norms and declining crude oil. These challenges are paving way for fuel-efficient and green cars that will not only improve mileage but will reduce harmful greenhouse emissions and save the natural resources.

Car manufacturers are now heading in search of alternative fuels that can help them meet current challenges and define the destiny of automotive future. This has finally led to a number of green cars comprising electric cars and hybrids in Indian as well as global car market. In India, Reva Maini and Honda Civic Hybrid are live examples of green cars.

With all car manufacturers moving ahead towards a greener future, renowned premium luxury car manufacturer Mercedes-Benz also takes a similar move with the introduction of its BlueZero concept.

Fascination of BlueZero Concept

The BlueZERO concept is a trio of green cars that use an assortment of innovative and existing technologies to overcome the challenges and meet new market needs. The most interesting element of this trio concept is the sandwich floor design that sandwiches the powertrain partly in front and partly underneath the passenger compartment in a sloping position. This form of car design architecture is mainly used for better packaging of engine, improved safety of car passengers, and optimized use of space.

Though the basic design of the trio green cars under the name of one concept is the same they posses different technology. Explained below are the actual differences between the three cars:

The first concept of the trio uses a liquid-cooled high-voltage lithium-ion battery that drives an electric motor linked to the front wheels. This powerful battery enables the car to run 200 km in one single charge delivering a top speed of 150 km/h. the lithium-ion battery is free of harmful chemicals and hence give zero emissions.

The second concept accommodates a new generation fuel cell that also beholds a hydrogen tank and a high voltage battery. The engine generates a peak power of 121 bhp. At slow speed manoeuvres energy is used exclusively from the battery whereas while accelerating or at high speeds energy is drawn from both the battery and the fuel cell.

The third concept possesses a conventional 67 bhp turbo-charged petrol engine as well as a petrol tank that offers a maximum range of 600km on a tank full of petrol and 100 km in one single battery charge.

Outstanding Design Idiom

The BlueZero concept is creatively designed with striking character lines, translucent surface, dynamic side lines, and bionic structure. These design attributes give a dramatic appeal to the concept car that is further complemented by light-grey tailgate, L-shaped taillights, stylish headlights with LED technology, and transparent lenses. The V-shaped radiator grille with the centrally located four-pointed star adds more beauty and expression to the car.

The interior of the Mercedes's innovative concept car features a progressive design idiom. The bionic design lines that blend in subtly with the organic surfaces are carried over from the exterior structure. The interior also possess a wealth of structures and components inspired from nature. Moreover, the assortment of coloured transparent surfaces and semi-transparent edges lends a feeling of brightness. In addition, the dynamically shaped backrests, sporty front seats, and fluorescent instrumentation add more beauty and elegance to the intimate ambience.

Striking Attributes of the BlueZero Concept

The BlueZero concept offers a wealth of advantages to the buyers as well as the environment. They provide a high level of torque and are extremely efficient delivering zero emissions. This seems to be a perfect solution to future mobility requirement.

The futuristic BlueZero concept boasts of some of the most striking characteristics that hold the strength to revolutionize the car industry and reshape its future. Some of them are explained below:

Sandwich-Floor Design: This type of design allow three different drive configurations to meet wide range of requirements. There are three key advantages of this design. One is to offer spacious cabin for passengers and capacious luggage room, second is to ensure low centre of gravity that offers agile handling, and third advantage is to improve safety in case of an accident. This not only ensures high safety for car passengers but also the car battery.

Front-Wheel Drive System: All the three concepts have the electric motor positioned at the front axle. The batteries are positioned in the centre of the vehicle floor and are protected against intrusion in the event of a frontal or rear impact.

Lithium-Ion Technology: All the car models have battery packs that are based on lithium-ion technology and have decisive advantages over conventional battery types. The key advantages are compact dimensions, higher performance, long operating life, and excellent reliability.

Fuel Cell: The new generation fuel cell in one of the three concepts use an electric motor, high voltage battery, and hydrogen tank positioned beneath the passenger seat to save space. It is known to use the most efficient energy source that delivers an emission-free driving and high standard of dynamic handling. Fuel cell technology emits nothing more than steam and is almost twice as efficient as an internal combustion engine.

Plug-in Connectors: The three car models use plug-in connectors rather than a fuel filler cap for easy and rapid recharging. One contact of the connector is designated for conventional power cables that fit into household power socket whereas the other contact is suitable for public recharging stations.
