Smooth or Easy Driving on Alloy Wheels

The flashy and sporty alloy wheels are the new trend with cars. They act as passion of the car enthusiast and offer a great appeal and splendor to the car. A few years ago, only luxury cars like Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, Porsche etc rode on these but now one can even find it in midsize sedans and hatchbacks. However, today it is available in the top-end models of hatchbacks and mid-size sedans. It also comes as an optional feature in some of the starting models. In some of the car models in India like Aveo U-V, Captiva, Fiesta 1.6 S, Getz Prime 1.3 GLX, Fabia (Elegance Diesel), and Innova top-end model all have alloy wheels. Dealers are also offering such good features in order to satisfy the customers with all the luxuries.
Alloy wheels are made from an alloy of aluminum or magnesium metals. These wheels are mostly used in automobiles like motorcycles, cars, and trucks. Alloy wheels have lightweight and differ from normal steel wheels. This is one of the best features of alloy wheels as they improve on road performance, steering and the speed of the vehicle. But there are exceptions some alloy wheels are heavier than the equivalent size steel wheel. The alloy wheels are good conductors of heat when compared with steel wheels. Alloy wheels perk heat indulgence from the brakes as they decrease the possibility of brake failure in more demanding driving conditions.

Steel wheels can be easily repaired when compared to repairing an alloy wheel when bent. As the prices are higher if purchased, it is much cheaper than replacement. If the alloy wheels are rigorously damaged it can be repaired and make it look like a brand new one. Again, this depends on the owner as to how much he wants to recover the wheels intrinsic worth. These wheels are very expensive to produce than the actual standard wheels. This is the reason as to why they do not come as a standard accessory on base models of many non-luxury vehicles. However, they are being sold as an additional option or come as standard equipment only in the top-end models.

But in the recent years they are becoming common and are available on sub-compact and economy vehicles. Few decades back where not at all dealer accessories on non-luxury vehicles. This can also be a disadvantage as they are expensive and attract thieves. Still there are solutions for every single problem where dealers provide issued wheel locks where one of the wheel nuts requires a special key to remove.

There are two types of alloy wheels:

Aluminum Alloy Wheels: These wheels have density of about only one third compared to steel wheels.

Magnesium Alloy Wheels: These wheels have a lesser density when compared to aluminium wheels and is less than one-quarter than that of steel wheels.

Some of the advantages of alloy wheels are they are easy to clean, good on road performance, gives a sporty look and lasts longer, reduces fuel consumption, increases steering power and maneuvering. The disadvantages are they are very expensive, lighter than steel wheels and can be bent easily; bent in the rims cannot be repaired easily.

So Alloy wheels are named for its sporty attraction, fashion touch and mainly for its durability.
