In the modern day generation when the car market is flooded with millions of cars, it is leaving a huge impact on the environment as well as natural resources. The green factor from the environment is vanishing with vehicles contributing to about 70% of the environmental pollution. On the other hand, increasing number of cars has increased the dependency on natural resources. Both these factors are currently influencing the car industry across the globe.
With this, efficiencies in fuel consumption and preservation of environment have become prerogatives for any automobile manufacturer. On the other hand, the world has started thinking small; smaller cars, smaller fuel consumption, smaller emissions, and smaller engines. And, Hyundai as a conscientious global corporate citizen focuses on introducing small cars and engines whilst preserving the environment.
Hyundai is showcasing its commitment towards green technologies with continuous innovation in technology and design. The introduction of Hyundai Kappa engine is a live example of Hyundai’s commitment. With the launch of this fuel-efficient and green engine, the car manufacturing is helping frugal-minded drivers meet the challenge of affordable transportation in this era of soaring prices.
The first car to have this small and fuel-efficient engine is the
Hyundai i10. It is also used in the i20 and will soon be found under the hood of the Hyundai Santro. With this thrift engine, Hyundai i10 and Hyundai i20 offer outstanding acceleration and captivating driving dynamics.
Unique Characteristics of Kappa Engine
The fuel-efficient
Kappa engine is an outcome of Hyundai’s excellent engineering. It is developed over a period of 48 months and is now heading to raise the bar in terms of power, performance, and mileage.
The Hyundai Kappa engine uses cutting edge technologies to reduce engine weight and friction. The aluminium block, first in its segment Double Overhead Cam Shaft (DOHC), and 16 valves with 32 bit microprocessor are the key attributes of the Kappa engine. These special and unique characteristics help to deliver class leading power output of 78 bhp and results in excellent drivability.
The engine block is composed of high pressure die-cast aluminium that helps reduce weight of the engine. By using aluminium to develop the engine, Hyundai has successfully maintained the lowest weight of 82.4 kg in its class among leading European and Japanese made engines.
The main block of the engine comprises a ladder frame construction, cylinders with cast iron liners, support bracket, and a timing chain cover. The ladder frame construction functions to provide superior structural stiffness while the cast-iron liners in the engine’s cylinder offer improved abrasion durability. Moreover, the engine support bracket and the timing chain cover further help reduce the weight of the kappa engine.
The offset camshaft reflects the skilled engineering of Hyundai’s professionals. This type of camshaft was first introduced in the Gamma engine introduced by Gamma technologies, a world class supplier of engine simulations. The centerline of the engine is offset by a very small distance to minimize the side force created by the pistons that in turn reduces fuel consumption and lower levels of NVH (Noise, Vibration, and Harshness).
Kappa engine also features an innovative piston concept and a highly sophisticated process of Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD). The uniquely designed piston of the engine results in weight savings and in turn improves fuel efficiency. The innovative PVD is used to ensure high wear resistance and a low friction coefficient by using an ultra-thin layer of chromium nitride (CrN) on the oil ring of the piston.
Kappa is the first Hyundai’s engine fitted with an accessory drive belt that does not function using a mechanical auto-tensioning adjustment device. The longer spark plugs are also a significant introduction as they help to increase airflow into the combustion chamber and also optimize combustion.
Moreover, there are some of the other unique attributes of the kappa engine that contribute to improve fuel efficiency. Some of the most significant innovations that help improve fuel efficiency of the engine are roller swing arm, hydraulic lash adjusters, new valve spring, and beehive shape retainer.
Furthermore, the 16-bit 32 MHz microprocessor that controls the engine unit regulates/monitors the ignition timing, idle speed, knocking, and emissions.
Advantages of Hyundai Kappa Engine
With the introduction of the kappa engine, Hyundai has rewritten the laws of engineering. It is believed that the car manufacturer has invested about 421 million dollars to present the world with this frugal engine.
Some of the key advantages of the kappa engine are as follows:
- Power Packed Drive: The engine offers high-end performance without any compromise on mileage.
- Super Mileage: The advanced double overhead camshaft in the engine revs ahead with increased power and torque and delivers better fuel efficiency.
- Solid Durability: Aluminium engine block makes the engine durable yet light whereas the beehive valve spring helps to extend life of the engine.
