Electric Cars: Setting a New Path for Indian Car Industry

Electric cars are gaining prominence rapidly. The Indian as well as world’s car market was greatly dependent on gasoline few years back but technology and innovation with all its power have reduced the pressure on gasoline. Technology has come up with various alternatives for crude oil. One of the alternative fuels running the engine of cars is electricity.

Each one of us today is affected with the increasing pollution, smog, noise, fume emission. We all need to enhance the quality of life and the best way to take an initiative is to think about the environment we live in. The most sustainable invention of innovative technology is the Electric Vehicle Technology, a technology that is paving the path of Indian future.

The technology is invented as a result of the depletion of oil resources. Electric vehicles run on engines that are charged with electricity, eventually reducing the country’s dependence on oil imports.

The first electric car launched in India is Reva, a car designed with the latest state-of-art EV technology. The outer body of Reva is designed using dent proof body panels and the components are designed using lightweight tubular steel. The speed of the car is somewhere between 80-100 kph and that’s something enough for the congested Indian roads. The latest technology has produced a light weight car with enhanced performance. Other electric cars manufacturers in India are Mahindra & Mahindra and BHEL. Along with these auto majors, many other global car markets have their eyes on niche Indian car market.

India is considered as the best place to introduce the innovative electric cars. This is because of the established auto component infrastructure, availability of mechanical hardware, low manufacturing cost, low production start up cost, availability of R&D facilities and presence of a huge domestic market. Apart from this, high fuel costs, high urban congestion, low vehicular speed and restricted driving distance have also contributed in making the country a hub for inventing such innovative technologies.

One of the burning issues with the electric cars is the lithium ion battery. Unfortunately, over consumption of the batteries are reported to burst into flames. Some even say that this technology has come up in the market too early. The energy density of the batteries is not just enough to meet the requirements of the increasing car demand in the country. Over population has unfortunately led to over consumption of electricity, which has eventually resulted in power cuts in various cities like Mumbai and Bangalore. If there is so much of power cut, how can one charge up their car’s battery?

Therefore, a holistic approach is required to promote electric cars in the Indian market. Government, public, auto majors need to be involved in the promotion of this technological advancement. Media can also make a contribution in educating people about electric cars and influencing them to maintain a clean and supportive environment.

Environmentalists have stated that about three lakh electric cars on the Indian roads can reduce to about 16 lakh metric tons of CO, NOx & HC, potentially, savings about Rs. 3700 crores in foreign exchange coupled with significant health costs savings.

Electric Cars, the future of Indian car industry, is a dream waiting to come true. We just need to give wings to this innovative technology.
