Election campaigning is no longer done in an Ambassador car. Politicians are now opting for well-equipped, swanky sport utility vehicles (SUV) that provide them good comfort and safety on all types of terrains during election campaigns. The month of April witnessed an increase in demand for utility vehicles in India. With national elections being held in April and May, SUVs are seen everywhere during rallies and campaigns. This has led to huge sales of SUVs in India even though the global auto market is reeling under the threat of bankruptcy. Mahindra & Mahindra, the country’s biggest SUV manufacturer, posted 36 percent sales jump during April. Sales of Tata Motors' SUVs jumped up 43 per cent in March over February. Though SUVs constitute 9% of the total car market, they are bringing in higher profit margins for auto companies, thanks to elections.
Sport utility vehicles provide maximum seating capacity and can travel anywhere - on city roads, on highways and rough terrains. The Mahindra Scorpio, Mahindra Bolero, Ford Endeavour, Tata Safari, Toyota Innova, and the Maruti Suzuki Gypsy are some of the favourite vehicles of Indian politicians. Some classy men in white also prefer mid-segment SUVs such as the Honda CR-V, Chevrolet Captiva and the Mitsubishi Outlander for election campaigns.
The world class
Scorpio is the sector’s present flagship vehicle. Its diesel variants can comfortably accommodate seven to nine passengers. Mahindra & Mahindra recently launched a pickup variant of the Scorpio, called the ‘Getaway’. The Scorpio Getaway is a tough and refined SUV designed for adventure trips. The large and uniquely shaped Getaway delivers excellent off-road capabilities and provides immense towing capability and cargo space.
The Mahindra Bolero is one of the top-selling passenger vehicles which clocked a record sale of 55,924 units in the duration of 2008-09. This makes it the first car in the SUV/utility vehicle/multi-purpose vehicle segments to cross 50,000 units for two consecutive years. The Bolero is a fine blend of size, power, and rugged appearance. The regular and soft top versions are available in the SLX, SLE, XL, XLS, LX, MDI, DI, and the VLX CRDe variants.
The Ford Endeavour was introduced in India in 2003 and has been popular for its plush and versatile interior and rugged exterior appearance. The seven-passenger SUV offers superb off-road driving dynamics, responsive steering, superb handling and great comfort during long distance travel. The Endeavour provides state-of-the-art safety features such as dual stage driver and front passenger airbags, height adjustable front seatbelts with pre-tensioners and load limiters, anti-theft alarm, door intrusion side beams, and limited slip differential.
