People's Cars that Revolutionized the Car Industry

The chronicle of people’s car started a century ago when the first people’s car the Ford Model T that was introduced in 1908. The car was designed and produced by Henry Ford to present the world a new mirror which reflects an entirely different concept of four wheels and provide mass motoring solutions for all.

After the launch of Ford Model T many other car manufacturers around the world experimented and succeeded in producing the best people’s car that were not only technologically proficient cars but also the cheapest barrier breaking mini cars. Today after a century, another people’s car Tata Nano shines in the industry and beacons for affordable personal mobility.
Here are some of the best people’s cars that revolutionized the car industry during different era of automobile history.

bullet  Ford Model T

The Ford Model T was released in 1908 by Henry Ford and was launched with a price tag of around Rs 43,500. Henry strived to produce an affordable, reliable, durable, and technologically proficient car and he finally produced the Ford Model T. The year of production was considered to a historic year for the company because the car had received a tremendous response in the market. It is tagged as the first people’s car that was within the reach of millions of car buyers and a car that placed the world’s greatest nation (U.S.) on wheel.

It is believed that in the first year of its production about 1,257 cars were sold and that was one of the biggest accomplishments for the car as well as Ford Motors Company. The car was refined and refurbished in the year 1925 and the company successfully sold two million models that year. It remained in production until 1927 and later on was replaced by Ford Model A.

The Austin 7 was produced in 1922 by Austin Motor Company. It was designed with the aim to provide the best means of affordable personal mobility to all the car buyers across United Kingdom. The car was comparatively smaller and lighter than the Ford T.

The Austin 7 was one of the most popular and affordable cars ever produced in the history of automobiles. It was equipped with a 747cc engine that generated a modest 10 bhp. The car was also licensed and copied by many car manufacturers around the world. It also made its way to India and even today the Austin 7 is found in many of the vintage car rallies or gatherings. The production of the car finally stopped in 1939 and till then almost 290,000 Austin 7 were sold in the market.

bullet  Fiat 500 Topolino

The Fiat 500 Topolino was introduced in 1936 with diminutive size, aesthetically pleasing lines, economical fuel consumption, and most important an affordable price tag of around Rs 26,000. It is believed that this great and scintillating car was designed by Dante Giocosa, an aeronautical engineer who started his career with Fiat in 1928. The car attained instant success with its pleasing appeal and impressive mileage. It was known as the Topolino, the Italian name for ‘Mickey Mouse’ and was tagged as the smallest cars in the world at the time of production.

Fiat 500 Topolino was equipped with a 569cc engine that gave a top speed of 85 km/h. Three variants of the cars were produced until 1955 with minor mechanical and cosmetic changes. The car was phased out in 1955 and till then almost 520,000 cars were sold.

bullet  Volkswagen Beetle

The Volkswagen Beetle was launched in 1938. It was the concept of a Nazi’s dictator Adolf Hitler whose vision was to offer an affordable, spacious, and reliable car to the German masses. The task of designing and producing the car was taken over by Ferdinand Porsche who developed the car following the vision of Hitler in 1936 which went into production in 1938. The car was originally known as ‘Kafer’, the German word for ‘Beetle’.

During the period the Beetle was launched it was considered to be the most comfortable, powerful, and economical car. Gradually, it became the longest-running car and the highest selling car in the U.S. The key factors that contributed to the success of Beetle are the cuddle appealing design and excellent engineering. The production of the car was then halted in 1998.

bullet Citroen 2CV

The Citroen 2CV produced in 1948 got its name from a French tern, ‘deux chevaux vapeur’ that means ‘two steam horses’. It is an iconic car of the French auto manufacturer Citroen and was designed as a perfect mobility solution with low cost and simple design to offer excellent versatility, reliability, and off-road driving.

Citroen 2CV was considered for manufacturing in India in early 1980s by Escorts but did not receive government’s approval as the Indian Government did not want to give any kind of competition to Maruti Udyog. The production of Citroen 2CV ended in 1990.

bullet Austin Mini

The Austin Mini was manufactured in 1959 and was well known as the Britain’s Beetle because of its appeal. It was artistically crafted and designed by Sir Alec Issigonis. It is believed that the front wheel drive layout of the car influenced a generation of car buyers.

Austin Mini rejoiced its success in Britain as well as in North America. The car was designed with an aim of producing an extremely fuel-efficient and compact car that can fit any curves and road space with ease and convenience. The Mini was voted to be the second most influential car of the 20th Century, behind the Ford Model T.

bullet Maruti Suzuki 800

Maruti 800 is India’s first people’s car that was unveiled in 1983. The first 800 was produced with a 796 cc engine under the joint venture alliance between Government of Indian and Suzuki Motors, Japan. The introduction of this small and cost-effective car revolutionized the Indian car industry by offering the best of technologies in the minimum price value.

The M800 grasped a huge market share that forced other car manufacturers during that time to cut down their car prices. Till date Maruti 800 has undergone many facelifts and modifications to beat the rising competition in the market. The M800 was tagged as the cheapest car in India until the position is taken over by another revolutionary car, the Tata Nano.

The introduction of Tata Nano marks a new century of people’s car. It has not only revolutionized the Indian car market but has created a big hype in the international markets as well. Tata Nano is the outcome of Ratan Tata’s vision to produce an affordable means of transportation to Indian car buyers especially to around 58 millions two-wheeler owners. Tata Nano is powered by a peppy 694cc engine that generates a power output of 33 bhp and is available in three variants.

With the launch of this new century people’s car many two-wheeler buyers can afford to buy a safer means of commuting for themselves and their small families.
