Top 3 Car Warning Systems to Reduce Car Accidents

Car warning system is a general term used for all car safety devices that warn a car driver about the various risks and dangers faced while driving. The main purpose of these is to alert the driver to take precautionary measures well before any eventuality.

Though the Indian car market does not currently support all the advanced safety technologies, the high end luxury cars in the country do come with a few of these top end safety devices. These state of the art safety features help the driver and passengers feel safe. In the future, more advanced technologies and innovations are expected to arrive in the Indian car market and some will even be available as standard feature on most cars.

The new phase of the Indian car industry emphasizes the importance of safety on the road. There is stress on car manufacturers to ensure that their cars offer a very high level of safety to the driver as well as the passengers. Here are the top three car warning systems found on high-end luxury cars in India:

bullet Blind Spot Information System (BLIS)

This is one of the greatest innovations in car warning systems developed by Volvo. BLIS is a system of protection designed to prevent car accidents. The device uses an external camera fitted at the rear to give a visible alert to the driver when switching lanes. Sometimes it becomes difficult for a driver to judge the actual distance of the trailing cars. BLIS is a perfect solution to check the blind spots behind the car in order to avoid an impending accident. The first car in India to have this feature is the Volvo S80 sedan followed by the Volvo XC90 SUV.

bullet Distronic Plus System (DPS)

Distronic Plus is an accident prevention system that automatically maintains a constant and safe distance between the car and its surrounding objects. It is also one of the most sophisticated cruise control systems. It employs a series of radar sensors to achieve the purpose and is controlled by the driver via steering wheel mounted controls. Based on inputs from the sensors, the onboard computer automatically adjusts the brakes and acceleration of the car. It also warns the driver when the risk of an accident is high and enables him to take evasive measures. This allows the driver to bask in the driving experience without having to worry about accidents. In India, the DPS is available on the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and Mercedes-Benz CL-Class.

bullet Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS)

Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS) is a new safety technology that warns the driver as soon as the car starts to drift from its lane on narrow roads or highways. To detect unintentional lane departures, the device uses various infrared sensors. A set of six sensors is fitted under the front bumper. All sensors have infrared light emitting diodes that emit infrared beams onto the road to study their reflections off the road and surroundings. Variations in these reflections are then detected by detection cells within the sensors. These variations trigger the LDWS system and warn the driver of an undesired deviation. This top-end feature is currently available on the BMW 5 Series.
