The Great Escape in desert

Testing a car through the rough climatic condition is something that car manufacturers follow religiously. It is a test of endurance for the cars. Off-road enthusiasts participate actively in such car races as they drive past rough patches and enjoy the sound of the wheels revving uphill. It has become a matter of pride for car enthusiasts to be associated with such events.

One of such car testing events is conducted annually by Mahindra and Mahindra called the–Great Escapes. The great escapes have been previously conducted in the regions of Munnar in Kerala, Coorg in Karnataka, Siliguri in West Bengal and in sand dunes of Rajasthan. It has been conducting these events from the last eight years. Being summer season, we shall look into how Mahindra’s utility vehicles fared in the scorching Rajasthan desert. Mahindra has been holding Great Escapes annually in the Rajasthan in the regions of Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Bikaner, Manwar, Jaipur and other western Rajasthan towns. The 41st Great Escape was held in Mandwa in Rajasthan. Mahindra best SUV like the Scorpio, Bolero and Getaway competed against the older models like Jeep, Classic Legend and Major.

Though the evening was dull, it has its share of entertainment. The 35 kilometer long route had an abundance of sand dunes, rocky hills and steep inclines. All those who like the thrill of driving through danger and challenge the nature got a chance to test their skills in this event. It also tested Mahindra vehicles to the hilt. Talking about it, president of automotive sector of M&M, Mr. Pawan Goenka said “The Rajasthan Great Escape is a car enthusiast’s delight. It will give the off-roaders an idea of how much Mahindra vehicles can endure. Leave alone the good old utility vehicles like Jeep, Classic and Legend, even the latest versions of Scorpio and Bolero have fared well in the event. It has gained a cult status among car enthusiasts.”

There is no competition among the participants but the sheer thrill of negotiating the harsh road with their driving skills sent a thrill among them. The challenge was not doused by sharp inclines either. The rocky patches saw Scorpio struggling to get over them. The Mahindra Jeep felt at home in these conditions. The cars start of from civilised world of asphalted roads but soon spread their wings when they hit the sands. Many car drivers were seen struggling to climb up the sand dunes. But the dunes, being sloppy proved tough for the drivers. They tried and tried again to climb up only to be rolled back by the sands. Eventually many successful drivers crossed several dunes and some did so with some help of fellow participants. The grease burned, clutch wore out, and engine revved to their maximum capacity to compete in the event. Overall it was a display of healthy competition without anyone loosing in the event. At sunset the drivers congratulated each other for the effort. They partied late night till their heart’s fill.

It is an event that a hardcore off-roads drivers love to participate.
