Nano Launch Marks a New Century of People's Car

The launch of the world’s cheapest car ‘Nano’ is touted as the evolution of automobiles. The car has come a long way overcoming hurdles and controversies from the time it was showcased at the Auto Expo 2008 to the formal launch on March 23, 2009.

The launch of Nano is a triumph of India’s ingenuity. The production of Nano was a culmination of intelligent brains, innovative designs, improved infrastructure, excellent resources, and foremost the dream of Ratan Tata. Now when the car has finally launched it is taking a toll over the entire auto industry.

Nano-mania is spreading like a virus that is progressively trapping car enthusiasts and car buyers from across the country. It marks a new century of people’s car because it has been a great success to live up to people’s aspirations.

bullet Nano Repeats Tata’s History

Nano is said to repeat Tata’s history as it narrates the same story that echoed in the automotive industry a decade ago when the Tata Indica was launched. The launch of Nano in many ways is reminiscent of 1998 when Tata launched the first indigenously made car, Tata Indica.

In 1995, Ratan Tata dreamt of producing the Indica with the size of the Maruti Suzuki Zen, dimension of the sturdy Hindustan Ambassador, and the pricing of the Maruti 800. He shared his dream with every Indian and finally unveiled its first passenger car Indica in India. Moreover, the car was launched at a time when there was an economic downturn.

The same history is repeated with the launch of the Nano. Ratan Tata in 2003 saw one more dream to produce an affordable compact car for Indians. Finally, the dream comes true in 2009 and again the dream car of Ratan Tata is unveiled at a time when the market is completely in the clutches of economic fall.

Repeating the same history now Ratan Tata aspires that the Nano emulates the success story of the Indica as well. It is believed that in the initial months, the Indica received a good response from car buyers across the country. And the way Nano interest is rustling up among car buyers, Tata Motors expects a similar growth.

Going by the popularity of the car, Tata is expecting lakhs of applications from car buyers that will help the company meet the challenges of the recessive market.

bullet Nano in Small Car Race

The first people car in India was introduced 25 years ago with the launch of the Maruti 800. M800 was a revolutionary car that marked the evolution of automobiles and today the launch of another people’s car has sparked a new revolution marking a significant milestone in the voyage of automotive discovery.

The impact of Nano on small car segment has been tremendous. All the major brands like Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, and Chevrolet that have small cars in their portfolio are facing a tough time with the launch of the Nano. Nano-mania has taken such hype that car buyers are just trying to grab the Nano key because of its excellence in all respects. The USP (Unique Selling Point) of the car is the extremely affordable price tag and better mileage than other leading small cars like the 800, Spark, and the Alto. Adding to the worth is the compact dimension of the car along with low ground clearance that makes the car run efficiently on congested city roads.

bullet Influence on Two-Wheeler Buyers

Nano is expected to have an immediate impact on the two-wheeler market. All the two-wheeler aspirants are now willing to upgrade their choice to cars. They are now willing to buy a car that that’s affordable delivers a safe journey to their families.

A car anytime offers more safety than a motorbike or scooter. This may drive the interest of young drivers who commute long distances to work towards the Nano as it proves to be a safer and better alternative for a two-wheeler. However, the insurance may be comparatively high but a little higher amount for improved safety is something that all car buyers will love to pay.

Nano is perfectly designed for a small family of four with ample of leg room and headroom with around 21% more spacious interiors compared to an average small car.

bullet Impact on Used Car Market

Nano is a big threat for the used car market. People who have an option of buying a small car with an affordable price tag and higher mileage won’t ever go for buying a used car that may have a comparatively higher cost of ownership.

However, according to the industry used car market has already experienced a drop of 10-20% in prices of used cars especially the small cars like the Maruti 800, Alto and the Hyundai Santro. All these used cars fall in the price range of Rs 1 Lakh to Rs 1.75 Lakh but now who will buy a used car if the same amount can help a used car buyer purchase a brand new car with comparatively higher fuel efficiency.
