The search for alternative fuel quickened as the fact about fossil fuel drying up spread. This forced
car manufacturers to look for alternative fuel system to run cars. It gave rise to
hybrid technology.
The hybrid technology has ushered in several combinations of fuel sources. Such as electric-petrol;
bio-fuel-petrol and others are available in the market. A hybrid car will help save a lot of petrol, which is getting dearer by the week. It has low emission, thereby lessening pollution level.
Hybrids are getting popular across the world and India will also follow the trend soon. Considering that fuel efficiency is the highest priority for Indians, they would rejoice if hybrid cars are available at affordable prices. Hybrid cars like
Toyota Prius,
Honda Civic and
Mahindra Scorpio will be coming to India by this year end. General Motors is developing Chevrolet Volt, which will leapfrog the car fuel technology to next generation. The car uses lithium ion batteries which are widely used to run all electronic goods.
So far hybrid cars are expensive compared to petrol/diesel cars. But hybrid cars though costly at the time of purchase, prove beneficial in the long term. You will be saving on petrol/diesel expenses over a long period of time.
But many people have queries on hybrids like
- How it works?
- Will it have the power?
- Will it be comfortable?
- Is it affordable in the long run?
The car engine sources energy from two sources alternatively in hybrids. When the car is in motion, the engine absorbs petrol so that it gives power and performance. When the car comes to halt, the car uses electricity power. This is applicable when the car stops at traffic signal or is kept idling by the owner. The car switches to petrol once the accelerator is pressed again. The ride quality or performance of the car is not compromised.
Hybrid cars run for a certain miles at a specific speed. For example- An electric battery charge can be run the car up to 60 kms per charge. The car can gain a maximum speed of 30kmph during its run. This will not only help save fuel but also achieve zero-emission level.
Hybrid car are thus useful in saving fuel expenses and reduce pollution levels. There are two kinds of hybrid car available in the world- 1) parallel hybrid car 2) series hybrid cars.
Parallel hybrids- The electric batteries; its motor and gasoline engine are connected to the transmission. With this configuration the car will be able to use both motors independently and provide propulsion power.
Series hybrids—the petrol engine is connected to the generator to charge battery or helps power the electric motors to provide propulsion. It is not connected to the transmission. Hybrids are the technology which will drive the cars and commercial vehicles in future. It will re-define commuting in future.
