The 1,000 Horsepower Club

In spite of the economic depression and never-ending motivation of the environmentalists to go green, man still continues to push the boundaries of on-road performance. Till some time back, a 500 horsepower car was considered top-notch, but of late this magic number has become run-of-the-mill and easy-to-own. Nowadays, the bar has been raised to 1,000 horsepower. But vehicles with four-figure horsepower ratings aren’t as uncommon as you might think. Here are the twelve official members of the 1,000 horsepower club.

bullet Bugatti Veyron 16.4

For the Bugatti Veyron 16.4, everything is a superlative. With 1,001 bhp power output pumping out from its W16 engine, it is the world's most powerful production car. Its 407 km/h speed makes it the second fastest car in the world and with a price tag of about $1,700,000, makes it the world's most expensive car.

Bugatti’s engineers have combined two eight-cylinder engines together to make an 8.0-litre W16. Moreover, it also boasts of four turbochargers under its hood that gives its awesome power. The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 also prides in its seven-speed double-clutch gearbox and permanent all-wheel drive.

bullet SSC Ultimate Aero TT

This car has entered the Guinness World Records for its unbeatable speed of 414.31 km/h in September 2007. The SSC Ultimate Aero TT is powered by a twin-turbocharged 6.4L V8, which can produce 1,287 bhp. Currently, the American company Shelby Supercars is experimenting to produce world’s fastest electric car based on the Ultimate Aero.

bullet Zenvo ST1

Denmark is not really that famous for automobiles. But the Zenvo ST1 can change that thought. This super car’s robust power is supplied from a 7L twin-turbocharged V8 engine. The Zenvo ST1 can produce 1,104 bhp of power which is controlled at the flick of a switch. It can accelerate to 100 km/h in just 3.2 seconds, and it has a top speed that is electronically limited to 375 km/h. Adding to the exoticness of the car is that only 15 units of Zenvo will produced in a year.

bullet Locus Plethore

The Locus Plethore is a state-of-the-art, high performance Canadian supercar. This three-seater is available in two versions, a supercharged V8 6.2L engine that churn out a power output of 750 bhp and another version of the same car can produce 1,300bhp. This car is limited to an annual production of 400 units.

bullet Koenigsegg CCXR Edition

Swedish car manufacture Koenigsegg launched the CCXR Edition at the 2008 Geneva auto show. This unpainted carbon fibre body of the car also houses a 5.0L V8 engine that is enhanced by twin centrifugal superchargers. This car has an exclusive feature that it can run on E85 or on regular gasoline. When running on E85 it produces 1,018 bhp.

bullet Weineck Cobra

This car may not look like the other members of the 1,000 horsepower club with its retro roadster body. But looks can be deceiving. Under the hood of Weineck Cobra is a 12.9L V8 engine mounted that generates 1,100bhp without the help of turbos or superchargers. Driving the Weineck Cobra is like sitting on a rocket with wheels. With no electronic traction aids, it is raw, a 100 proof adrenalin shot on four wheels! Only 15 of these beauties were produced.

bullet Lotec Sirius

This car comes from a small German company that made its name by developing race cars. The Sirius is its first production. Though the Lotec Sirius was conceived in 1992, it personifies the 21st century supercar and this car looks even more futuristic than the Carrera GT and Enzo.

The Sirius is powered by 6L twin-turbocharged Mercedes-Benz V12 that has been tuned to produce up to 1,200 horsepower. Its top speed is estimated to be 400 km/h.

bullet Saleen S7 Twin Turbo

This car is America's first supercar with mid-engine configuration. It is the third fastest car in the world with a top speed of 402 km/h. Officially, the S7 Twin Turbo produces 750 horsepower, but owners can upgrade to bigger turbochargers to get 1,000 bhp.

bullet Bristol Fighter T

The Bristol Fighter is a British sports car, manufactured by Bristol Cars. This car uses a front-mounted V10 engine of the Dodge Viper to produce 525 bhp. However, the Bristol Fighter T which comes with gull-wind doors also features the added boost of twin turbochargers, increasing its power output to 1,012 bhp.

bullet Dodge Viper Venom 1000 Twin Turbo SRT

The Dodge Viper Venom 1000 Twin Turbo SRT is the fastest and most powerful limited-edition street car in the world. Though the stock version delivers 600 odd bhp, it can produce 1,200 horsepower with some expert tuning. You must be thinking who’s behind this output. There’s only one possible answer: the American performance company Hennessey Performance Engineering (HPE).

bullet Ford GT1000

It looks like any common Ford GT, but Hennessey Performance Engineering gave the Ford GT1000 a forceful 1,000 horsepower under its rear deck with double turbochargers.

bullet Mosler MT900S

The MT900S is a sports car built in the United States and the United Kingdom by Mosler. The Mosler MT900S has been tweaked by race car engine manufacturer Nelson Racing to give more power. They added a pair of turbochargers to the seven-litre V8 engine and the tweaked MT900S is capable of producing 1,150 horsepower on standard 91 octane gasoline. However, with increased turbo pressure and if a higher grade of fuel is used, its rating is capable of jumping to 1,800 bhp. Its acceleration must be hard to imagine, considering the MT900S weighs about half as much as the Bugatti Veyron!
