Diesel is the much preferred fuel for cars in India. It has been seen that companies have introduced diesel variants to push sales graph up when petrol variants failed to evoke enthusiasm among car buyers. Almost all
small cars have diesel variants, while the some of the larger cars are yet to get diesel siblings. Let us have a look into which features help them score and what are their drawbacks. The array of options is very confusing for a first time buyer.
Re-sale value: Most buyers consider the resale value of the car as a dominant factor, even before they purchase the new one. They also look for large interior space and cheaper running costs. This is because they plan to switch to larger cars as soon as possible and cost factor plays a vital role between diesel and petrol versions. The diesel small car segment is ruled by
Maruti Suzuki Swift, followed by Tata Indica and then by Fiat Palio.
Here are few famous diesel engine cars listed along with their merits and demerits.
Swift and Palio come with a similar engine technology of 1.3 liter multi-jet engine. Indica gets three versions of diesel with a 1.4 liter displacement capacity. The 1.4 liter Dicor engine is the latest introduction. Swift is the costliest car among the three, at ex-showroom prices. But this has not deterred the buyers, who like its excellent looks and attractive re-sale value.
Maruti Suzuki Swift: Priced from Rs 3.99 lakh onwards, Swift has been admired for its fuel economy and driver’s comfort. The front seats are spacious. The box like dashboard can hold more CD’s than one can play. In fact the Swift diesel gives a better ride quality than its petrol version. The suspension is stiff and can counter bumps more perfectly than other small cars. The wide tyres give a better grip on the road. Buyers should choose wider tyres, as thinner ones will not give the good grip. You also get the power steering, rear power windows, engine immobilizer and fog lamps (though they are useful only in selected regions). Anti-lock braking comes as an add on features. The thick B and C pillar obstruct views. You are sure to get servicing and replacements service at whichever place you want.
Fiat Palio: It is by far the best car for performance in the category. Palio give better ride quality compare to Swift. The driver can neither feel the bumps or shocks when zooming at high speeds. This is due to the excellent suspension. On the highway the Palio can speed on easily without the slightest trouble. But the same cannot be achieved when the car cruises in low speeds. The turning radius is wide. The multi-jet engine improves fuel efficiency. The car has an airy cabin. The dated dashboard does not hinder with the driving. In fact it is the only small car that still comes with analogue odometer and trip meter. The only drawback is the re-sale value which is not promising enough. The high end version of Palio is cheaper than Swift’s base version.
Tata Indica: The diesel variant is the cheapest among the three. The diesel variants start from Rs 3.43 lakh and the top end variants can cost Rs 4.19 lakh onwards. The Dicor engine is available in two variants. It does not come with power windows or ABS or cramped rear passenger seats. However, the fuel efficiency is higher than most of the cars in the segment.
Tata Indica also comes with low cost maintenance and low running cost. The high positioned seat makes seating comfortable. However, the interiors are negatively affected by cheap plastics and not-so-easily accessible switches. The driver’s seating position is also not comfortable for long drive. But Indica has crossed the 10 years successfully, relying solely on the high
fuel efficiency merit.
For those who are looking at quality, it is a huge market. But for those who want to make the most out of their car, Indica is the best choice. Indeed choosing a car depends on ones’ priority and requirements. However, it is best not to compromise on quality as it will fetch rewards in the long run. Maybe three years down the line, a good quality small car will still remain your favourite.
