Manual and Automatic transmission systems are the two transmission systems available for cars.
Automatic transmission amongst the two helps to make the drive simpler and easier. Unlike before, cars with automatic transmission is becoming popular in India, changing the once popular notion that Indian roads are not suitable for cars with automatic transmission.
Now, to know more about what is an automatic transmission, how does it work and how is it useful in the Indian roads.
Different from a
manual transmission system, the automatic transmission omits the need of engaging a clutch pedal and selecting a gear ratio manually. The automatic transmission system is not very popular in India, but is gaining popularity at a very slow pace. But it was not the condition in the initial days when everyone though the Indian road conditions will not entertain the automatic transmission much. But in countries like America the automatic transmission system is hugely popular, since as early as the 1960s. In the urban road conditions, where traffic is very high, the automatic transmission will help to make the drive a hassle free experience.
By choosing an automatic transmission car, one is making the driving easy and trouble free. The automatic transmission will remove the trouble of driving a car where three pedals need to be operated with just two legs.
For selecting a particular mode, one would have to utilize a gear shift lever positioned on the floor next to the driver. This is very similar to what is done in a manually transmitted car. In an automatically transmitted car, there will not be a clutch pedal as seen in the manually transmitted vehicle. So, instead of depressing a clutch pedal one would have to engage the shift lock button on the lever.
The driver can then select the desired mode from a set of options that is usually available in the gear selector. In short, all a driver has to do is to engage the foot brake and push in the shift lock button and choose the option needed. Isn't the system really easy to operate?
In an automatic transmission system, Park is denoted by P, Reverse by R, Neutral by N and Drive by D. The P option mechanically locks the transmission system and stops the car from moving to any direction. Usually the selection of P is one among the two options in which the engine of the car can be started. N or Neutral is the other option.
Selecting the R or reverse option puts the car into reverse gear. The driver can choose the reverse gear only after depressing the shift lock button. Normally, to avoid any transmission damage, the structure has a safety mechanism that will not let the driver shift to the Reverse mode before pressing the shift lock button.
The Neutral mode stops the transmission from the car's driven wheels completely. And this is very similar to a manual transmission equipped car. At the Neutral mode the car cannot be started. But at this mode, the car can be moved to the front or back without any trouble. It is always advised that that the parking brakes should be engaged while the car is in the Neutral mode.
Drive mode will let the car to move forward. And this could be done through the different forward gears. Earlier, the automatic transmissions cars were available in two or three forward ratios. But now, the most common option is that of four or five speed ratios. Some auto manufacturers are now giving the option of six-speed or eight-speed gearboxes.
These days, in India there are many cars that have automatic transmission.
Honda CR-V, Toyota Camry, Audi A6 and Skoda Superb are all examples of car with automatic transmission.
