Indian Motor Rallying has a rich heritage nearly about 30 years old. This activity started in India during the World War II when the runways in different country parts were left deserted. These deserted areas were eyed by sports enthusiasts for pursuing and enjoying sports activities. One of the earliest airstrips where motor rallying made its beginning in India was at Sholavaram, located near Chennai.
Further to that, many more sports enthusiast started taking interest in the fun activities, which eventually gave birth to the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India (FMSCI). This federation then became the governing body of all such sports event in the country.
In the 1980s, Indian
motorsports received a major facelift with the entry of whiz kid Karivardhan, pioneer of single seater open wheeled racing car, ala Formula Ford. He together with Vicky Chandok designed and raced Formula India Single Seater Maruti Engine machines.
However, Indian motorsports was left in the doldrums when Karivardhan lost his life in an air crash. Later, in the 1990s, Narain Kartikeyan came into picture and revitalized the motorsports industry in the country. He chose road racing instead of motor rallying, and thereafter the race and rally have always been a hot topic amongst car enthusiasts.
With the increasing number of sports enthusiast and advent of hi-tech cars in India, rallies became more popular. It has now become an international scene where people from all over the world come to enjoy the thrill and adventure of driving beyond the limits. Today, India holds a major place on the international motor rally circuit. The biggest advantage of these rallies is the topographical distribution of the country.
The four teams that are closely associated with motor rallying in India are Team MRF, Team JK, Team JCT and Team Paarel. These teams sponsor the sports held as annual events. Though there are a number of sports today, the world class Formula One Car Race is one of the most popular and adventurous car sports across the country.
