Top 7 Future Car Technologies to go Mainstream in Future Cars

Technology and innovation is rapidly reshaping the car industry by increasing the capabilities of modern cars. Some of the recent significant innovations in the car industry are electronic stabilization, Blue&Me technology, car telematics, and car navigation system. All these car technologies along with other significant technologies are sensor-based systems that improve the safety, convenience, and efficiency of driving.

The modern day cars have improved to a great extent with these innovative technologies and future cars are expected to set new benchmarks and spark a new revolution in the industry. Technologies are continuously paving their way towards a brighter destination where the future cars will be found gleaming.

Potential future car technologies include new energy sources, new design materials, advanced safety features, and new in-car entertainment system. Explained below are the top 7 future car technologies that will become a top priority for future car buyers:

bullet Driver Assistance System

The Driver Assistance System is the brainchild of Mercedes-Benz and is expected to enter the car market within a year or two. The system is a safety device that will guarantee a safe and accident-free driving by combating the issue of drowsiness while driving.

The system is designed in a way that it monitors the linear and lateral motion of the car in accordance to the steering inputs and brake pressure. The installed in-built camera detects an eye-blinking observation and responds with an audible signal to alert the driver. If in case the driver does not respond to the audible signal the system sends another immediate signal. It also consists of an electroencephalogram (EEG) that reads the brain’s electrical activity and provides objective indicators of drowsiness.

bullet Automated Highway System

An automated highway system (AHS) also known as the Smart Road is a proposed intelligent transportation system technology designed to get relief from traffic congestion. With this introduction the roadway has to become magnetized fitted with stainless-steel spikes. The cars of the future equipped with this proposed technology will sense the spikes on the roadway to measure its speed and locate the centre of the lane.

It will be associated with power steering, automatic speed controls, and a computer. This will enable the car to have short distance between each other which will eventually minimize the air resistance. The primary goal of the AHS is to develop the specifications for vehicles and roadways that will improve safety by providing fully autonomous computer controlled driving.

bullet Camless Engines

The Camless engine technology is soon to enter the car market with a big bang. In this type of engine there will be no camshaft or connecting mechanism and the entire valve motion will be controlled by a valve actuator. This future technology is believed to deliver reliable valve performance and more power. It will also reduce cost of engine, power consumption, and the levels of noise and vibration.

Till now, it is heard that two types of cameless engine are under development, electrohydraulic and electromechanical. Electrohydraulic type will be using hydraulic fluids for controlling the movements of the valve whereas the electromechanical valve trains will use electromagnets to open and close the valve. This is likely to be one of the best fuel-saving technologies in the future.

bullet Self-Repairing, Self-Cleaning Paint

Car manufacturers have continuously been trying to offer their customers relief from the worries of paint scratches. Manufacturers are on the verge of introducing high grade car paints that will automatically repair minor scratches and wipe off dirt from the exterior body. It will also automatically repair minor cuts.

Nissan has already developed a topcoat paint composed of elastic resin that performs a similar function. Unfortunately, Nissan approach is a short term performer as the paint stays active for only three years. Other car manufacturers are constantly researching and analyzing the possibilities of introducing a high grade car paint that can perform the required function till the end of the car’s life.

bullet Self-Parking Cars

Parking is a big pain for many drivers with limited parking space in big cities. At times parking can even lead to traffic tie-ups, frazzled nerves and bent fenders. Fortunately, future technology will resolve the issue by the introduction of self parking cars.

The system installed in the self parking cars will use ultrasonic parking sensors combined with a new electric power assisted steering system. The sensors will measure the actual distance of the car from other cars in the parking lot and then with a push of button it will automatically steer itself into the snub parking space. Minor input from the driver may be required.

However, in the international car market there are few self parking cars but India is still to witness the technology. The same technology can also be used for self-driving cars and collision avoidance system in future.

bullet Turbosteamer

Turbosteamer is a future innovation by BMW that will reduce fuel consumption and enhance power output. It will be fitted to the car’s exhaust system and will convert the heat wasted in the exhaust to supplemental power for the car by using a steam piston.

The future technology will deliver an estimated 15% gain in fuel efficiency that further increase at higher and steadier speeds.

bullet Vehicle Infrastructure Integration

Vehicle Infrastructure Integration (VII) is an excellent technology designed to provide a communication link between the road vehicles and their physical surroundings with a primary objective to improve road safety.

The system will completely rely on a business model that will have support from the concerned authorities including the transportation authorities, industry, and other professional organizations. It will help to increase the safety, efficiency, and convenience of the transportation system.
