Autobahn is a term that refers to freeways in Germany. The country has a network of highways with no speed limits. According to a survey, Autobahn stretches up to 11,000 km. There are plans to add more such routes in Germany. The official name of the route in Germany is Bundesautobahn or the federal motorway. Today, Autobahn connects most part of Germany, Austria, France, and Italy.
History
Highways with multiple lanes for traffic separated by a grade central were built in Germany for the exclusive use of Motor vehicles. The first such road was constructed between Cologne and Bonn in 1931.
Later when the Nazis took over power in 1933 and Adolf Hitler became the chancellor, they took active interest in extending the highways to more places. Hitler saw it as a military advantage and it also helped to create jobs for the local population that time. Nazis later used slave labour to intensify their construction of highways.
The increased network of roads gave the Nazi military a quick access to far off places and improved their logistics. By the end of WWII, the Autobahn network measured 2,128 km. The next phase of development started in 1953 with the Federal republic of Germany.
General Rule for Design
The general rule is to provide uninterrupted high speed traffic flow. Most Autobahn features 2, 3 or 4 lane design. It has a landscaped green median. The roads are freeze resistant that gives smooth ride. The roadbed is 70-centimeter or 27.5 inch in thickness. Additional space on the sides of the roads for emergency stopping, long acceleration, and deceleration are provided. The authorities maintain the road at excellent condition. Every square inch of the road is checked with high tech road scanning equipments. If a fissure is noticed, the entire section of the road is replaced. To provide quick motorability signs barriers and other features are well maintained.
Being a mountainous region, runnels and bridges are common on the route. The Autobahn system has over 65 tunnels. In cases where it is possible, separate tunnels have been provided for traffic on either direction. In order to protect motorists from usual danger of hillslides and others, the tunnels are equipped with 24 hours video monitoring, constant display of information over radio, sign boards, and refuge rooms with emergency telephones and other emergency systems in place. Equipments to monitor weather, traffic density, and the results are used to warn drivers passing through the route.
In order to facilitate high speed traffic, special laws are applied on the use of Autobahn. Bicycles, mopeds, and pedestrians are banned from entering the route. Vehicles which have speed rates less than 60 km/h are also restricted.
Why Car Manufacturers Love Autobahn?
The routes are restricted to motor vehicles capable of driving at high speed. The recommended speed for German Autobahn is 130 km/h and higher (we never could do that on Indian roads). Most of the fastest cars in the world are tested in the route for precision, performance, and power. Cars like the Porsche 911, Boxster, Mercedes SLK Class,
BMWs, Ferrari, Audi and others are frequently used.
European car manufacturers often quote the Autobahn figures to highlight its endurance and power. It has become one of the key statistics for many car manufacturers across the world nowadays.
Cruising at a speed over 200 km/h is completely legal. With prevailing high speeds, the rate of death, injury or accidents is far lesser than those seen in western countries. Autobahn results in only 6 percent of accidents from the total traffic in Germany. According to a 2004 statistics, the fatality rate is only 3.2 per billion kilometers. This is far lower than in United States freeways which have recorded their lowest of 5 fatalities in 2003.
Virtually, almost all well-known drivers in the world have driven through it. Many racing enthusiasts including those in India have heard about it. It provided the ultimate test of precise engineering and craftsmanship. The Autobahn network is world's third largest superhighway system after the big countries like United States and China.
Some of the famous cars that have been tested are:
Audi R8
This speed machine has been the winner of many awards. Audi R8 is powered by a 10 cylinder 4.2-litre engine which churns out a massive 420 bhp. It can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in only 4.4 seconds. The manual and the automatic transmission are precise and offer an exhilarating drive. It has a top speed of 301 km/h (187 mph). The Audi R8 is dearer to many racers across the world.
BMW M6
This Bimmer offers a fantastic ride over freeways. Under the hood, it has the massive F1 inspired V10 engine that delivers 500 bhp. It sprints to 100 km/h in less than 5 seconds. It has all the modern race car adornments like the carbon fibre roof, a seven speed sequential manual gearbox. Equipped with high quality German Engineering, the M6 is an epitome of accuracy.
Porsche 911 GT3
As all Porsche's have twin personalities, Porsche 911 GT3 is partly a racing and partly urban car. Car's 3.6-litre 6-cylinder engine can deliver 450 bhp with ease. The GT3 has a top speed of 312 km/h. It can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in just 4.3 seconds. It can decelerate even faster, making it one of the safest cars. It is one of the dream cars for many racing enthusiasts. Many would have noticed that the Carrera and the Turbos, but the GT3 is equally capable of giving the typical 911 aggressive driving dynamics. It is a car meant for the Autobahn.
Mercedes-Benz SLR Mclaren
Constructed jointly by the leading car racing company Mclaren and the Mercedes, it is a high performance car. It is not legally an AMG but has all the personality of an
AMG engineered car. Few people own it because of its steep price. The driver can experience a speed of 0-100 km/h in less than 3.8 seconds. It is powered by a 5.5-liter V8 engine that churns out impressive 617 bhp. It is left to the driver to exploit it at the Autobahn, which is the only place one can drive for several kilometers without worrying about speed limits. It has a top speed of 321 km/h. Mercedes-Benz used to test all their vehicles on the Autobahn in the 30s.
Porsche 911 Carrera 4S
The
Porsche 911 Carrera 4S has a simple step to interesting driving. Hold the wheel and press the pedals. The large V6 engine can quickly change speed. Its 385 bhp power is judicious as per Autobahn standards. The 911 Carrera 4S can blend with the traffic when needed and can cruise at a top speed of 300 km/h on the freeway. It can go from 0-100 km/h in just 4.5 seconds. The Carrera is one of the most popular 911 in the world. It is a car loved by celebrities as it is a purely an action car.
