bionic car is a concept vehicle. The car is built based on examples in nature. Bionics is a blend of biology and technology. The ides of high-strength materials, dirt-repellent coatings, low-friction surfaces and practical Velcro fastenings are borrowed from nature.
It is for the first time that the Mercedes-Benz bionic car came into being due to the combined effort of the engineers at the Mercedes-Benz Technology Center (MTC) and DaimlerChrysler Research. These teams searched for a specific instance in nature that has the shape and structure matching their ideas for an aerodynamic, safe, spacious and environmentally compatible car.
The boxfish was what the team found. More than having an angular body, it is also an excellent swimmer that has a cube-shaped structure that is not at all a hindrance. The outer skin of the boxfish has a firm suit of armour that gives the body of the fish great rigidity, protects it from injury. The boxfish is thus an ideal example of rigidity and aerodynamics
and a very good choice for better aerodynamics. And thus the boxfish became the model for a so far distinctive automotive development project.
The concept car is equipped with a 103 kW/140-hp direct-injection diesel engine. It has a fuel efficiency of 4.3 litres per 100 kilometres (combined), which makes it 20 percent more economical than a similar standard-production model.
The Saab Aero X concept exploits the power of Saab's aviation and Scandinavian roots to make a distinctive testimonial in performance car design. Envisaged as a study to discover future design directions, the concept car is sure to inspire the future products from Saab.
The Aero X is a dynamic two-seater sports coupe that breaks with automotive design convention both outside and inside. The Saab Aero X has a cockpit canopy that is seen in a jet aircraft and so it has no doors or windshield pillars. This facility gives the driver a full 180 degree vision and also makes entry and exit from its low-slung cabin.
The Aero X has a twin-turbo, BioPower V6 engine and is fueled entirely by ethanol, a sustainable energy that is eco-friendly with reduced carbon dioxide emission. The concept car has pure Scandinavian interiors by entirely eradicating the age old dials and buttons. By displaying data on glass-like acrylic 'clear zones' in graphic 3-D images, the Saab make use of the applied techniques derived from Swedish glass and precision instrument making.
The exterior and interior of the car is lit by LED. It has a lightweight powertrain, weight-saving carbon fiber bodywork, electronically controlled suspension and all-wheel drive.
