Tata’s Dream Car Nano Becomes Reality

Since its venture into the automotive segment, Tata Motors has led a successful journey surmounting every hurdle in its path. Few years back, Ratan Tata has dreamt of producing the world’s cheapest car which now becomes a reality with its launch. Though initially, this concept was taken lightly and in some point even criticised, now the Tata Nano is ready to take the Indian car market by storm.

Tata’s dream car project has finally taken its shape with the launch of the Nano in March 23th, 2009 marking a special day for Tata Motors as well as for the Indian car industry. The little car is rolled out displaying power, style, and elegance in its own economical way. There were many negative comments during the development of the car like the car would never make it to the Indian roads, it is mere a dream, but all these never drained the company’s confidence and the team went ahead with their project.

The commercial launch of the Nano proved all criticism wrong. It’s a complete family car with a seating capacity of four passengers and offers all the basic features found in a small car. It also offers a striking impressive fuel economy of 23.6 km/l higher than its competitors like the Maruti 800, Chevrolet Spark, and the Maruti Suzuki Alto.

The car has become India’s pride which has imprinted the Indian car industry’s name in the global automotive history forever. The little wonder on wheels will always be known for creating a unique car segment worldwide.

Presently, the car is creating a rave globally for its distinctive character and ultra-low price tag. Let’s see what the god father of the Nano - Mr. Ratan Tata has to say about his dream car.

Description of Nano in his Words

It was a challenging idea which is based on the emotional desire. The aim of the car is to provide an economical transportation to the middle class families in India keeping in mind the safety and protection of the passengers. A team of more than 500 engineers put in their hard work and effort and gave it a beautiful and useful shape. Finally when the car took its form, there was a sense of scepticism which was immediately followed by a feeling of excitement and achievement. Tata Motors is proud to present a one-of-its-kind car to the masses with an extremely low price.

His First Impression

The invention of the Nano has created a new dimension in the global car industry. It has introduced a personal cheap mode of transport which is presently centred to the Indian car industry but very soon the magic of Nano would be experienced in overseas. After going through all the troubles, Tata was adamant about Nano launch. The car was scheduled to launch in October 2008, but got delayed due to protest of the Singur farmers over land issue. But everything fell on right track and the Nano finally made its appearance in March 2009. The first batch of the Nano will be rolled out from the Pantnagar plant in Uttarakhand, which is a temporary facility till the plant at Sanand in Gujarat is fully operational by 2009 end or early 2010. The Pantnagar plant carries a production capacity of 50,000-60,000 cars.

Price Factor

The company is not deviating from its words. Despite the increase in input cost and prevailing credit crunch, it kept the promise of pricing the little car with Rs 1 Lakh tag. Though the company went through heavy loss due to plant shifting and in resolving the Singur issue, it launched the car with the announced price tag declared while the concept was unveiled for the first time. According to the company, it is playing a fair game and this isn’t any kind of attention seeking technique. It emphasises that the Nano is an evolution in the mode of transport rather than a cheap car.

Nano in Overseas

Nano is not just restricted to India. It is in demand also in the international market. Very soon we can see Nano in the developing markets like Africa and South Asia. Tata Motors also plans to introduce the Nano in Europe, UK, and U.S. markets. The Nano Europa build keeping in mind the European market was recently unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show. Currently, the Nano Europa is getting ready to meet the emission and safety norms of Europe. Once every thing is settled, Nano is expected to hit the European market by 2011.

Level of Competition

Nano is a challenge not only for small cars but also for the two-wheelers. With the launch of the Nano, many two-wheeler manufacturers are planning to come out with attractive offers to sustain their market share. Many car manufacturers are also feeling a strong threat from Nano and are planning to introduce small cars. Even the used car market is preparing itself to face the challenges that might hit the pre-owned car market. Nano tale does not end here as we are yet to see various Nano siblings in different versions.
