Eco-concerns rules Car Future

More number of vehicles in the roads had significantly increased air pollution. The large demand coupled with global warming is pushing automobile manufacturers towards fuel efficient engines. Drying up of fossil fuel along with crude oil price hike is responsible for a shift to alternative fuels.
Bio-fuels, hybrid technology, electric cars and gas based (CNG and LPG) technology are some of the options in the direction of eco-friendly cars. Car manufacturers are also working hard to introduce more eco-friendly cars in the market. Tata Motors has been in the forefront of such research in India, while Mahindra and Mahindra is developing a strong alternative fuel based cars. M&M has already launched the Scorpio hybrid. Tata Motors has unveiled the Nano which is highly fuel efficient. The company is developing an electric car with Pininfarina, the famous Italian design company and has acquired sole right for manufacturing air cars from a French company. Tata is also planning to manufacture fuel efficient commercial vehicles in collaboration with US car major Chrysler.

As Indian car market is dominated by small cars which account for 75 percent of the total sales, the car manufacturers are dropping to manufacture small cars. Though compact cars do not produce enough power, it is well known that small cars with lower displacement are more fuel efficient. Based on this, many large car manufacturers are shifting towards smaller engine for their cars. The process of shift is slow and the results may appear only after 7-8 years. The shift is also due to hike in crude oil prices. The western countries allege that the huge demand from China and India are responsible for the rise in fuel costs.

Some Indian car companies hope that their fuel efficient small cars will enter the US car market, which is now focusing on the smaller engines as a solution for global warming. If the market opens to Indian car manufacturers, the diesel cars will be the most favoured ones. The top US car makers like Ford and General Motors have already reduced the production of large SUVs, due to falling demand.

Compare to petrol version, diesel cars are more fuel efficiency with low running costs. The emission levels are also low. Diesel cars are already selling higher than petrol versions. The smaller diesel engines could be the answer to future oil crisis.

But cost and hassle free usage of cars will remain the top priority of customers. The car manufacturers have also realised that they can get a larger market share, if they have more eco-friendly cars.
