ARAI, a non-profitable co-operative industrial research organisation was formed in 1966 in collaboration with the Automotive Industry, Ministry of Industries and The Government of India. ARAI is an acronym for Automotive Research Association of India is headquartered in Pune.
Since its establishment in 1966, ARAI has been providing technical expertise in R&D, testing, certification, homologation and framing of vehicle regulations in India. It has been playing a vital role in designing and developing safe,
eco-friendly and more efficient vehicles for the Indian car market.
ARAI is the first Research & Development Organisation to be awarded ISO 9001 Quality System Certification for its work in the field of automotive engineering. It has been awarded ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001 and NABL accreditations as well.
Developmental testing and certification especially as per Euro norms is one of ARAI’s major activities. Apart from this, other activities of ARAI include:
- Research and Development in automotive engineering for car industry
- Evaluation of automotive equipment and ancillaries
- Formulation of standards and implementation of regulations for certification purposes
- Execution of advanced courses on the application of modern technology, and
- Conducting specific tests for automobiles
This institute has completed the development of electronic carburetor and deceleration cut-off system. It has also researched on the optimisation of CNG Engine to meet the current emission norms. ARAI has also succeeded in developing the conversion kit for bi-fuel operation on 3-wheelers. The Automotive Research Association of India has been credited to have completed various sponsored projects on road load, noise and vibration data collection analysis and simulation testing.
The contributions of ARAI to the Indian Government are as follows:
1. New Automotive Industry Standards (AIS) / Indian Standards for ImplementationARAI has formulated new automotive standards for implementation by enacting The Automotive Industry Standards Committee (AISC).
2. Road map for Automotive Safety StandardsARAI has regulated the road map of safety standards for automobiles in India. The primary safety standards for automobiles in India were finalized by ARAI in close consultation with Indian automobile and component manufacturers. In the secondary stage, ARAI along with other non profit organisations aiming for the betterment of Indian automobiles like Automotive Industry Standards Committee (AISC) and Central Motor Vehicle Rules - Technical Standing Committee CMVR-TSC formulated a series of rules and regulations for the Indian automobile industry to follow.
