Fusion of cars and utility vehicle

Fusion of cars and utility vehicle
Ford Fusion has been launched for some time now but it has been moving slow. It is not a car that will make heads turn when it hits the adventure trail. But not many notice that the car has all the perfect sensibilities for off-road activities. It clearly fits the bill of a family car.

It is also priced comfortably at Rs 5.95 lakh. Fusion is an important car in the Ford portfolio for India. It comes in between the premium sedan Fiesta and the tough looking Endeavor. The concept of a crossover SUV is interesting in India, where few are seen.

Ford has fitted Fusion with its famous 1.6 Duratec petrol engine, which responds like a sweet pet when made to drive. It also has a 1.4 Duratorq TDCi diesel engine fitted car, which is driving sales in the diesel fuel crazy country. The engine is teamed with the 5-speed short throw gear box. While the petrol version delivers 100 bhp and the diesel engine gives 67 bhp powers.

When faced with the hurdle of a length, they just cut the bumper by 3cms to make the front fascia look sleek and stylish. The 4-meter lengthy car sits neatly on the 15-inch wheels.

Ford Fiesta diesel version has been one of the top performers for some years now. The same diesel engine performance has rubbed on to Fusion. It gives an impressive run even with the low 3000 rpm. The torque of 2000 rpm is the same as the Ford Fiesta. The diesel engine feels slightly heavier than its petrol version.

While in urban locations the diesel version performs demurely. But put it I its actual location the off road and you will know it’s a driver’s car. The ride feels smooth. Sadly the manufacturer has not put in enough sound deadening to make it feel luxurious.  The gear box moves smoothly with just a light push. Take it on any of surfaces like tarmac, gravel, slush or rough terrain. But beware from the rocky mountainous Himalayas. Don’t ever try that. The suspension feels slightly hard in petrol version.

The interiors hold on firmly in any rough conditions. The plastic finish remains fine even under heat and dust. The crisscross weave finish plastic dash and re-designed upholstery can make you get addicted to it. The steering grabs all your inputs quickly and steers you smoothly over curves. However, the longer wheelbase gives you a wider turning radius. The seating position is slightly higher to the steering wheel position. But once you are used to it, you realize its clear visibility of the road ahead from every corner which is great for crowded Indian streets.

It’s a SUV based platform. It is compelling for those who like Ford’s performance driven cars. With Fusion you know you have made the right choice for a SUV.
